I now totally understand the allure of Mad Professor’s Deep Blue Delay which is so well-loved, and which my good friend Joe has managed to further refine and improve - using the very best in primo vintage and NOS components - all hand-wired in the most exquisite fashion.
This is truly a lush delay - leaning somewhat towards dampened and softened - slightly spongy in some ways - for the most beautiful decaying repeats. The nature of the decay is exceptional here - and I like riding the repeats as high as 3 o’c - just on the cusp of infinite oscillation.
I don’t normally go for mono spatial effects - typically preferring immersive stereo pedals for those sounds. While this SeaWolf is special - it’s just so beautifully textured and so musical sounding.
The visual could have featured a Navy Seawolf which for the UK is a missile, and for the US is a nuclear attack submarine. Instead I decided to feature the actual SeaWolf - AKA the Atlantic Catfish. This in turn is called Steinbítur in Icelandic (lit. ’Stone-Biter’) which is really rather tasty as it’s served up in that land!
Controls - Volume / Boost, Delay Time (25ms-425ms), Repeats, Mix.
I tend to have Volume @ Noon, Delay Time just short of Noon, Repeats @ 3 o’c, and Mix variable - from Noon to Max even at times.
The SeaWolf Delay has been released in a variety of Editions - initially large Dual Delay formats, and then Single Delay Editions in Medium and Compact Enclosures. There are unlikely to be too many more of the Compact varieties as they are so tricky to make - fitting all those vintage components into such a relatively small space poses a serious challenge.
There are currently 3 versions of the SeaWolf Delay on the Hello Sailor Effects Webstore currently, a compact one like mine @ £250 (different fabric), a Medium Vertical one @ £240, and a Medium Horizontal one at £240. So the Compact one has a £10 premium on account of how fiddly it is to make. While that’s always going to be my favourite format!
The Deep Blue has long been many a player’s favourite delay - including of course Matt Schofield - and the Hello Sailor Effect take is a further level above. Highly recommended!
There aren’t any demos of the Single Editions - so the original Dual Edition will need to suffice!
This Compact fish-skin-fabric SeaWolf Delay is my 8th HSE Pedal - I love each and every one of them - they’re all unique but still distinctly Hello Sailor. The only one I’m really missing is noe of Joe’s signature Expanded Range Masters - where I’d love that to be in the Leia Rebel Rebel livery! - what a great selection! Each of those is a related article for this feature!
