I’m going to start this month’s roundup with a couple of conundrums that I’m still kind of wrestling with.
Firstly about my old friends at Sinvertek, whom I can’t but think that they might have jumped the shark with their latest release. It’s another spin off of the Scream Honey line - the 4th or 5th in that series. Mr Wu seems to introduce tiny improvements each year, and every other year we get a price rise too. On this occasion the offering is two pedals - supposedly both slightly different component takes on the Klon Centaur. So this time around it’s a pair of pedals - which goes for $699 (Edition of 59), as well as a very limited run of 19 pairs with extra special components that go for $999 a pop.
I obviously need to share the love each month across as many brands as I can - and where without discounts - $699 or $999 is really just too much for me to spend on a single brand - especially for a couple of 3-knob overdrives. I obviously put my money into the recent Wampler Germanium Tumnus Deluxe - which sits much better with me. I wonder how all of you feel - especially the ones I helped bring across to Sinvertek - is this a step too far now? Or are you OK with it all. And will you be getting in one of those pricey Sinvertek Pedal Pairs for yourself? My Scandinavian sense of value always pulls me back from the abyss, and while I’m kind of reconciled to paying $399 for a Chase Bliss pedal, and $679 for a Strymon BigSky MX eventually, $699 seems a big chunk of change for 2 x 3 knob overdrives. It’s almost as if this is moving more into Art Project and Collectibles territory - where I’m still about journeyman touring machines!
Tina even sent me an email to sort of chase me up on where I was at, I think for sure I’m sitting that one out!
The second matter that has caused me a lot of consternation is the new Antique V3 Pedal from Cornerstone Music Gear. I used to be directly connected to owner / founder Emilio Massari - while for this Phase 3 rollout of Cornerstone pedals - Emilio has offloaded all brand handling to his new Dutch Dealer Musifacts - where I was handed over to one Mike Smale - who was to be my sort of handler. Despite my best efforts for the Nero - Emilio’s and Musifacts’ hands-off approach meant that I received my pedal several days after the launch event - yet I still persevered and put in the effort on behalf of that great fuzz.
This time around - when Emilio first teased the new design on July 10th - I contacted Mike Smale - my Musifacts representative - who has still to deign to reply nearly a month later. When the release went live this past Saturday - I had not been sent any references or materials - no press release etc. I asked Emilio what was going on - and he basically told me that he no longer had any time for me - which apparently his dealer has neither. The way I work means that I need direct contact with brands or their representatives - without that all I can be is a press release regurgitator like every other site out there. I’ve given Cornerstone one more chance to show and improve - but I’m not holding out any great hopes there. If brands won’t collaborate with me - they inevitably will get relegated from my coverage - which in this instance is a shame - because Emilio is making pretty great stuff these days. I don’t really understand how it’s all come to this!
One final niggle involved my possibility of attending an event north of the border. Readers will know that I always do my own visuals, and own unique takes on event posters etc. On this occasion I’ve been asked to use their exact official show poster - which is not exactly to my liking. The very nature of this site means that I need to be able to.do my own creative spin on the subject matter - I’m definitely not one for doing advertorials or branded endorsements - it just doesn’t fit into the mission or M.O. for this project. And so weirdly it looks like that trip is off now due to some weird terms and conditions being placed to my participation. I guess I have a fairly uncompromising approach to all of this - but surely that’s what makes GPX a level above everything else out there!
Oh - and I’ve had Covid since the Brigton Guitar Show - it kicked in late afternoon of the Monday after the show, and is still somewhat lingering over a week later. I’ve gone through the more tormented phase, and am sort of coming out of the dazed phase now - I’m still beset by brain fog! So everything is taking me a lot longer to accomplish. Visuals still flow fairly freely - but the brain fog is impacting my verbal reasoning to a degree - and I feel a little dyslexic every now and again - forget how to spell certain words, in fact even forget some words entirely. Things are improving though - and I’m hoping to be back to full strength within the next few days.
The Covid hasn’t really massively held things up - I’m still pretty productive - it’s just that everything is taking a lot lot longer to accomplish - but that path is finally starting to accelerate again!
I loved the Brighton Show in any case - felt like a family reunion. And I knew everyone in the Pedal Room! You should read my detailed Show Report if you haven’t already - lots of interesting details in there!
This month had a little bit of an Australia slant to it (7 pedals) - I was playing catch-up on PastFX - which I thought I had done pretty well on - while Verlie has already teased her next pedal - Kurt’s Cologne - a cool take on said Small Clone - so I’m one behind again! I also picked up on new Australian brand Audio Blend Effects - which needs a few more demos to its name - there’s only one demo out so far - admittedly a brilliant Brett Kingman one - but at least a couple more are needed to cover the range!
Other notables this month include the new Nordland Electronics MT-11 Mosland Mostortion pedal, the JAM Pedals Rattler MK2, my new VS Audio Plexi / Vox pair, a new Ritual Devices Grimalkin (new to me that is!), and then the excellent new Chase Bliss Onward, and Source Audio Artifakt. A really decent spread for the month - with several other pedals landing fairly imminently - including the new Jr compact version of Formula B’s 80 Master - which I’m immensely looking forward to - and means I can finally do my Marshall / MIAB 32 Pedal Rundown!
There’s already plenty of content waiting in the wings for August - which should still be a strong month for me, even though there will likely be few new pedal releases in that summer vacation month for most!
If you’ve not read the GPX Inspired #1 feature yet - then go treat yourself now - that’s one of the most praised articles in a long time - and should be inspirational for anyone planning to build a board!
I’ve had several kind words of support this month too - do feel free to support me on Patreon if you really like what I do!
20 Pedals Added in July - a pretty even spread across the main categories - particularly in the Boos/Overdrive and Modulation selections.
It's great to have sort of caught up with PastFX again, and there are some excellent long-termers among this group.
Will be fascinating as always to see which pedals make it to the Class of 2024 roundup - competition is incredibly high this year - plenty of targets still out there, including the new Strymon BigSky MX - which will definitely happen one of these months but not August - that's already spoken for!
A really fabulous selection - 3 Boss FA-1 variants - as listed first, a much wanted Edition of the Super Phat Mod, and the brilliant Nordland MT-11 Mosland, beautifully balanced PastFX BLD, and the super versatile Jangle Master - which does just need a touch more output volume for my liking - especially when compared to its Platinum Preamp sibling!
3 beautifully expansive and versatile distortions, including the 2 Rat Distortions. The PastFX distortiion is something more of a specialist choice - great for Billy Corgan fans, and a little challenging for most everyone else, The distortiion for me is mostly a combination / stacking pedal - it doesn't sound particularly great on its own - especially into a clean pedal platform - but if used to beef up an already cooking amp or fuzz - then it does a thing - while for me there are other pedals which are rather more easy to dial in.
3 totally killer fuzzes this month - all distinct, and the Grimalkin is particularly expansive in its output. I'd put these 3 fuzzes up against anything in their respective categories - fantastic textures all round!
5 superb modulators here - all of a different stripe, and all currently on the board. The PX-101 will likely be the most short-lived of these as I prefer to use that slot for Tom Morello style Pitch-Shifting. Also the TR-7 is jolly decent, but not quite perfect! While the other 3 will be in rotation frequently and ongoingly!
I really enjoyed my time with the MIME II this month - it's for sure an improvement over the original effect and the new Spring Reverb voicing is fantastic, while I largely tend to avoid mono spatial effects, apart from the RaingerFX Reverb-X which I really like for its textural qualities - and how you can kick it in with the Igor expression pad - has a little more of a dynamic about it, and better suits my sensibilities - while the MIME II has a lot more flavours onboard and that really handy Feedback Oscillation. Nice to have both in any case!
A close run affair as always!
July hasn't been a particularly busy month for releases - so this selection is a mix of new and old - as triggered by the various articles that were published this month.
I really like the look of the Benson / Non-Human Florist, and Catalinbread Bitters, indeed the TEFI Malinconia and Glowfly Decoder too. Where the one I'm most likely to land first is the Bleak District Terra.
I've already got a number of commitments for August - so will be interesting to see when I'm able to act on some of these choices - it may not be possible for a while ...
17 slots updated this month, slots #2, #4, #5, #9b, #10, #11, #12, #15a, #15b, #18, #19, #21, #24, #30, #32, #34, and #36.
In fact all rows updated bar the last one. That will see a Strymon BigSky MX eventually - while not sure which month I will land that in - I could leave that to the last quarter of the year!
The PastFX PX-101 Lowpass Filter is a fantastic funk weapon - really puts some bounce into you groove - and can do all manner of quacky and twittery effects if you post it. I have loved my time with it, and it's going to be pulled out every now and again when I want those kinds of tones - while I probably prefer to have my usual Tom Morello style pitch-shifter on this slot!
It's fantastic that I've had 2 really killer Octave Fuzzes in quick succession - last month it was the JAM Pedals Octaurus, and this month it's the turn of the Hello Sailor Effects Mini Monmouth. Each one is slightly differently textured, while they're both really potent and bold and full of flavour. This Monmouth also has exceptional guitar volume cleanup too!
The Spaceman Rumblefuzz II is exactly as expected - full of flavour and with that killer low-end heft to its output. Surprisingly easy to dial in - while the *|= options can quickly become too much - a case of goldilocks dynamics really. All 7 of my Spaceman Effects Fuzzes are killer really!
This is my 4th Nordland Electronics overdrive - the MT-11 Mosland - and it's yet another on-form pedal from Kai Tachibana. I have 4 Mostortion pedals now, and this is the king of the crop! The Wampler Moffetta, Drunk Beaver CMOStortion, and Danelectro Roebuck are all excellent too - but there's some extra magic in this Mosland Overdrive!
Actually the second of my Blend Audio Effects - but appearing first in the chain of those 2. The core of this is more like a JHS Clover take on the FA-1 FET Preamp - with 3-Band EQ - but here further augmented by an Electra Distortion / Fuzz Module - which actually sounds best in tone bypass mode - so a game of two halves really! The differences in the two effects mean that you need to adjust the controls when switching over from Overdrive to Fuzz and vice-versa. Not always the easiest to dial in - but when you hit the right spot sounds really great! For the Fuzz - the gain needs to be notched down a bit - otherwise you can get some odd artefacts - really cool pedal in any case - just missing a demo currently!
The Audio Blend Edge EQ FET FA-1 Preamp is a fantastic expanded range take on that classic circuit with added Parametric EQ - which takes you into all kinds of new and interesting areas! Really good looking pedal too!
The updated JAM Pedals Rattler MK2 Distortion is a little more grown up and refined - with a couple of extra gears. A little smoother in places too - and gets nicely into 1981 Inventions DRV territory too. Really great update.
The Past FX BLD Boost / Distortion - based on TC Electronic Booster / Line Driver / Distortion - is a fantastic and exacting compact replica of that much loved super versatile pedal. In some ways it's a little bit of a PastFX oddity as Verlie normally adds one or two features of her own - but this is rather a pretty much 1 for 1 reproduction. Works beautifully in both Boost and Distortion modes - and is really nicely balanced.
The PastFX distortiion - based on MXR Distortion II - is that legendary Billy Corgan stacking pedal - used with his OpAmp Big Muff for some of the Lead tones on the Siamese Dream album. This is a somewhat unusual Distortion (an acquired taste I would say) - with a lot of low end content in its output - great for beefing up your amp or as a secondary auxilliary. I found this one a little tricky to dial in - and it's not really a well balanced effect - much better for brighter / single coil guitars than humbuckers I would say. A rather specialist pedal in many ways, and I can understand why it was discontinued. The PastFX BLD is a much better balanced pedal overall - and more versatile. I think this one is mostly for Smashing Pumpkin aficionados - I feel some would struggle to get along with this pedal, but a valiant revival still!
I really should have gotten to this one sooner - the VS Audio Platinum Preamp Silver Jubilee style. A slightly barkier take on a. Marshall - sound really great though and dials in so easily - also plenty of VOLUME! Really like this one - it's a little different sounding, a little more rigid / less elastic in some ways - but still a very satisfactory and crisp Marshall Jubilee Voicing!
The VS Audio Jangle Master Top Boosted Vox AC30 style Preamp is almost the perfect candidate - but could really do with more volume - Panos was looking into that for me, but has still to report back. Really versatile otherwise and with a handy internal Presence trimmer - which typically only needs a tiny adjustment. I'm trying to decide now which is my favourite PlexiVox pairing - I have at least one more pairing to try - from NUX - that will be the budget representative - and then I will update the PlexiVox article and state my preferences!
The PastFX Mischief is a fantastic Rat Distortion - a little more textured and rawer than the Rattler - and with a little more rasp and sizzle. The Rattler 2 is a more grown up / refined Rat Distortion, while the Mischief is still that quintessential garage punk - with a tonne of extras!
The Ritual Devices Grimalkin is one of those ultimate fuzzes with so many different flavours on board. Interesting that there aren't any EQ controls here, but you get so many different flavours onboard - a really smart circuit, while it could do with a little more volume for my preferences - sounds fantastic though!
The PastFX PX99 Classic Phase is an instant hit for me - a proper full flavoured phaser with heaps of range, and some clever controls that take you into Flanger and sort of quacky cocked wah territory. A really versatile modulation which seems to sound pretty magnificent every which way!
An interesting one for sure - the HardWire TR-7 Stereo Tremolo / Rotary / Uni-Vibe is actually really decent for me, and doesn't particularly miss a lack of Level / Volume control. It's decent, but I'm not sure it's top tier - pedals like the GFI Synesthesia and Wampler Terraform vastly improve on the quality and control of their algorithms. While the TR-7 is still a really great buy for me. I'm still on the hunt for the ideal Stereo Rotary Speaker effect - I want something really syrupy and loud - the hunt goes on!
The Chase Bliss Onward is their most usable pedal for years - you properly get fairly instant results, while there's real skill in getting the most musical output from this pedal. I've tried all manner of things to date with the dip-switches - where I largely now have the Reverse mode applied most of the time. I do feel the uptake on this is somewhat instant, while you need to work to achieve full mastery - and I'm not there quite yet. I had hoped to get some tips from Doug Tolley at the Brighton Guitar Show but too much else got in the way on the day - and so hope to catch up in Bristol I think the next big event is at! Nick Rees was doing some great things with an expression pedal too - while it involves very much a fully hands-on tabletop experience - while I'm still entirely stompbox based still!
I'm still in a very early phase with the Source Audio Artifakt Lo-Fi Elements - I've skimmed through each of the modes 2 or 3 times now, but have still to pick out my favourites. There have supposedly been all manner of issues with the Source Audio Neuro App - which recent update has still to be fully stabilised - and there are various users still experiencing issues - so I'm a touch waiting for all that to settle down before I really get properly stuck in - while so far so good!
It's weird that it's nearly 2 months on now - and I'm still waiting for the Fuzzed Drones demo of the Thorpy WOPR to drop - surely it can't be too far off now!
I'm hoping that the inevitable August slow-down will give me the opportunities to do some more specialist projects.
I may have mentioned that I have a 32 favourite MIAB / Marshall style Pedals Post coming up, as well as my 32 favourite Rat style Distortions - with some controversial choices in the mix!
As is often the case - I'm waiting on a number of demos to drop to publish certain articles - like the compact FA-1 capsule one.
I used to get a lot more requests - but they seemed to have dried up recently - apart from my good friend Henry Kaiser who suggests something bold every week - not always wholly relevant to the GPX readership, and occasionally very niche - but for sure will pick up on some of those eventually. I did want to do a Henry Kaiser Pedalboard episode - but he keener at the moment that I cover off some of his friends - I'm sure a plan will form there eventually.
I need to get around to my piece on Leo Lospennato - which I've given the title "An introduction to Leo Lospennato - the godfather of modern guitar luthiery". Leo wrote me some wonderful notes on many of his magical creations - and it's my duty to get that out there - so that is one of the projects I will be working on for sure - respect where respect is due!
I'm still looking to get the AI interface up and running for Patreon Members was just waiting on a few further fixes, and now the key liaison on that project is on vacation - so I need to catch up with them as soon as they return - should not be too long off now.
As for the Patreon - I've reached out a few times about doing a Jitsi Meet Event / sort of clinic - while there doesn't seem to be a huge appetite for that - for whatever reason. I'm still planning to do more open sessions, and some local meet-ups - if I can only get the relevant people engaged and motivated.
Great to see that my good friend Joe @ Hello Sailor Effects has a podcast now. I've always wanted to do one of those - but have struggled to find a partner to banter with - which is a must for those kinds of things. Hopefully there is someone out there somewhere - with a little more broadcast experience than me - who can make the a reality eventually - I want to bring the zoo format to pedal podcasts - who's with me!?!
For everyone on holiday in August - enjoy your vacation - I will still be delivering content throughout the month.
There's a couple of smaller guitar shows in August - including the second Alternative Guitar Show in Hackney on the 28th, and one in Glasgow on the 24th - which has somewhat imploded for me. I will definitely be at least one of those shows - maybe still 2 - but that's in the hands of fate!
