I’ve said it before that Death By Audio is definitely on a roll these days, and this is the second genius modulation pedal they have recently released - alongside their Space Bender. As Oliver Ackerman states - DBA are known for making the most intense and full-flavour effects - and so the Filtering, Flanging and Phasing delivered here is of the most impactful and textured sort.
Controls - Tensity (Intensity), Wave Centre Point, Width (Delay-line Offset), Mode : Filter / Flanger / Fazer, LFO Speed, On Footswtich, Trip / Freeze Footswitch, CV Out.
Control here is really simple - 4 knobs, a 3-way Mode switch, and On and Trip (Freeze) Footswitches. So you start by selecting your flavour of LFO Modulation - then adjust its intensity - where Oliver says that the ’-’ and ’+’ halves of that control are near 2 different voicings. You can then move the centre point accent of the wave, and adjust the Width / delay line offset for the wave. Speed sets the LFO Rate, and you can Freeze it at any point in the curve by hitting the Trip Footswitch.
You additionally have a CV Output Jack which you can use to match clock-speed with other devices and in turn trigger those in sequence.
I don’t mind that it’s in a medium size enclose - the orientation is most definitely correct. This is an all-round very thoroughly conceived modulation. Where the Freeze effect makes for some cool playback possibilities.
You can sort of play a game of stick or spin with the Trip / Freeze Footswitch - which can trigger some really interestingly textured tones - caught in between all those tiny transitions.
I really rather like the sound and function of this new pedal and it definitely warrants at least as a nice-to-have. I will be out on the Death By Audio Webstore on May 25th, and will retail for $250.
