I was fortunate to see / hear a late stage prototype of this Flanger X when I dropped in on David’s Hangar Lane Workshop just before Christmas - so it’s great to witness the final evolution and execution as such.
It’s always a magical experience to hear such a big sound coming out of such a small device - but that’s really what this pedal is all about - a massive Rocket Thruster Flanger with Maximum Flavour and Versatility. Of course you can dial it down for a cleaner chorus-y sound, and you can also dial out the Rocket noise if you wish - but why would you be getting this pedal if you weren’t intending to unleash its full potential!
Dialling up the Feedback gets you some extreme sea-sick wobble / warble and you have a few options on how to trigger the pedal’s output - by having it envelope-triggered, or activated in modulation bursts via the include Igor expression pad for instance. Note that the Igor is pictured slightly smaller than true size - for sake of fitting it into the visual!
Controls - Flange (Modulation Width + Pitch-changed Signal Mix), Mod Rate, Analog Rocket Noise (can dial down and out), Output Volume, Feedback, Igor input trigger switch, Envelope Trigger switch.
Strictly speaking and as David stresses - this is not a Jet Flanger per se as it is not based on that circuit. You could argue that the Jet Flange swoosh sound is similar to this one’s Analog Rocket Flanger noise - at least ballpark or adjacent - while there are significant differences between the two of them also - while at their core they excel at swooshy thrust-like sounds.
I’ve long been a fan of Flangers - and like with most of my modulation use - I’m all about a fuller flavour - and that is exactly what the Flanger X delivers. I see Rainger FX are exhibiting at the London Synth and Pedal Expo which I’m due to attend also - so probably makes sense to arrange to pick one up there!
This is a proper extended features Flanger with essentially 7 controls - 5 knobs and 2 push-button switches. So the price of this unit is definitely in line with its capabilities - and obviously covers the included Igor Expression Pad too - so £191 / c$230 (outside UK), and £229 (UK inc. VAT) for locals! Of course available for order on the Rainger FX Webstore, and imminently at dealers worldwide - including my friends at Axe and You Shall Receive in Canada, and Break the Machine in the UK!
I have several flangers in the collection already - but none that do this particular swooshy variety of that modulation - so this is a certain shoe-in for me. Like I said - I hope to pick one up at the London Synth and Pedal Expo on the 18th of March. Otherwise I would probably be making another pilgrimage to David’s Hangar Lane Workshop.
Are you as excited about this release as I?
