I’ve long been a fan of Matt Olson’s output, but somehow weirdly haven’t got around to acquiring any of his pedals quite yet. I particularly liked his recent wood-facia editions, but he’s gone one better really with his latest foray into Acrylic / Plexi Faceplate editions.
In fact this smart 3-knob Analog Phaser was the first to adopt that particular look - which looks at its best with the contrasting primary coloured knobs - which along with the geometric elements allude slightly to the art of Mondrian which heavily used primary Red, Yellow and Blue.
You can do some really clever backlit effects with Acrylic / Plexi Glass facias - and it’s something of a surprise it hasn’t been used more in pedal enclosure design. Matt has recently done similar treatments for the full current range - which for me are at their best onto silver enclosure and with colourful contrasting knobs.
This Phaser could not be simpler or more elegant to deploy - it has an all-analog signal creation / path with a digital layer solely for waveform manipulation. The three knobs - as I’ve labelled them cover the 8 Waveforms, Depth/Character, and Rate/Speed. There’s also a second Tap-Tempo footswitch. I would further assume that at its core it is most likely a 4-stage phaser - but where the particular smart part of the execution is the very simple control topology with just those 3 knobs.
I already have 11 Phasers to my name - including 5 new acquisitions this year. And I really don’t need another - but I do like the look of this one in particular. Of course it’s somewhat academic now as the first batch is long since sold out. When available, this retails for $209 on the Mattoverse Webstore. For UK Customers it should soon be available at friend Andy Birkitt’s Break the Machine store.
I’ve long been after the Mattoverse Air Trash Fuzz too - so would be looking to get both of those as a matching pair of Plexi-on-Silver enclosure with Red, Yellow and Blue Knobs!
