I believe the SuperCharged OD was first out in and around 2009 - in a 3-knob edition then - with Volume, Gain and Contour controls. The new one is significantly re-tooled with numerous refinements to the circuit - including an entirely new Tilt EQ control and with more range overall, while the same core 8 x MOSFET gain stage topology remains.
It’s a really full-throated, thick and juicy amp-like overdrive with an incredibly high degree of shaping - where the Tilt EQ pivots around the 800Hz mark.
Controls - Tilt EQ, Contour (Mids + Resonance), Volume, Gain.
Tilt EQ + Mids / Contour is one of my favourite ever types of tone stacks and is somewhat criminally underused! There is a similar tone stack actually on Catalinbread’s equally superb Giygas Fuzz - which is one of my long-term favourites.
The SuperCharged Overdrive has a superb rich and glorious texture - which makes it right down my street. Definitely looking to add this to the collection soon.
It seems there is an offer on the pedal currently - where it’s going for $149.99 versus its usual $174.99 price point - per the Catalinbread Webstore. Seems a very good time to jump on one of these. I’ve never been a fan of Catalinbread’s standard knobs, and the graphic is a touch wiry for me - but you can’t dispute this pedal’s output - which is glorious - with plenty of range available on every dial.
I don’t necessarily pick up on every Catalinbread release - for instance the recent GBX Gated Reverb - where I had had the new Boss RV-200 in the chain for nearly a month, and with it’s 12 gorgeous algorithms - including Gated Reverb, onboard presets and secondary effects - there didn’t seem to much point to pitching the GBX at the same time!
The new SuperCharged Overdrive though seems very decent indeed!
