This is the kind of ’fusion cuisine’ that was always pretty much destined to happen some day - the two fabled green overdrive pedals combined within a single compact enclosure, and Robert’s done it in a really slick way here. First of all - props to Robert and his gang for their really cool new wedge-shaped aluminium enclosure - and what looks like fairly custom knobs. Both get a big thumbs up from me!
But it’s the way that he’s combined the two different circuits that is the magic here - each with their own style of tone stack and clipping profile. In such a way that you can play opposites too - so you have have that ODR-1 flavour but with a conventional Tube Screamer style LPF filter, or conversely run the TS808 style softer clipping through the very unique Spectrum style Tone Stack - which raises Low and High frequencies simultaneously. Meaning that you have 2 x 2 flavours - and therefore a masterful and maximum impact 4-in-1 overdrive - fully analogue!
Controls - Tone ±, Tone Stack Switch : OD (Spectrum) / TS (LPF), Drive ±, Drive Clipping : OD (Hard) / TS (Soft).
It could not be simpler or smarter really - if you’re in two minds as to which of the two green pedals you should be getting - whether to get a Tube Screamer or ODR-1 Natural Overdrive - why not have both in the same box! Pricing is pretty reasonable too as the Keeley Noble Screamer goes for $199.99 / €249 / £215 - available right now on the Keeley Webstore and at International Dealers.
This is just such a cool concept - which I think can be taken further too - still within the same compact enclosure though. While as it is it is perfectly judged. Robert has seemingly calibrated it really well - and both core voicings sound superb - and in some ways even more so on opposite sides!
Key Features
I’ve been saying for a long time that most varieties of effects have been done by now - where the most logical route forward is the ’fusion cuisine’ one - where you blend effects together in new and interesting complementary ways that have not been tried before. This is such a simple idea - and perfectly executed. I already have my favourite Tube Screamers and ODR-1’s and equivalents - so I don’t need another - but this still goes straight in on the wishlist! I guess Robert is on a role with overdrives nowadays - as I feel I’ve only just recently picked up his also excellent Super AT Mod!
