I believe the original Fuzzrite was the second Catalinbread pedal I acquired - just after the Galileo. Readers will know I’m a fuzz fan (-atic even!) and there was no question of me not having this significant 60’s variant fuzz - somewhat splatty and raw and a big hit with garage punks and noiseniks. My Analog.Man Peppermint Fuzz somewhat overlaps but has slightly wider tonal range. The original fuzzrite was always a distinctive and firm favourite variant though - so it was inevitable hat I would want to complete the set when the Germanium variant recently materialised.
Controls - Volume, Depth, Mode : Modern / Vintage.
It has the same two knobs as the original, with an additional Voicing / Mode switch - which significantly beefs up the low-end content for a more contemporary sound. The Silicon variant is somewhat spiky and in your face - and the Germanium plus the Modern Mode switch somewhat soften it up and add further subtle harmonics. The only Fuzzrite I’m still after now is Basic Audio’s 4-knob Fuzz Right which also handily beefs up the low-end.
The Fuzzrite Germanium is well priced at $179 on the Catalinbread Webstore - which nicely translates to £179 - where I got mine from Andertons - in fact I believe I snagged the last one they had in stock!
I’ve been unable to do much playing recently because of the significant heatwave we’ve been having - that means it’s wholly impractical so shut all the windows in order to do some playing (and not offend the whole neighbourhood!). So the new Fuzzrite has landed - and I have already dug out its original partner - to do a head-to-head when the temperature finally drops again later this week. I will drop and addendum in the comments below when I’m able to!
Are any of you fans of the Fuzzrite circuit - and which variant/s do you own and favour?
