I believe the original Perseus was out in around 2011, with quite different controls - Volume, Cut, Blend, and a I / II Sub Octave toggle-switch. The core fundamentals of the circuit are the same in terms of it being a sub octaves square wave fuzz - rendering somewhat 8-bit Nintendo sounds by default.
Where in the new version you can use the dual LPF Filters to further modulate or clean up those octaves. This is a much more subtle animal than say the Redbeard Effects Honey Badger Dual Sub Octave Fuzz - while it has its own really pleasant texture.
The control topology is quite different in the new ’Dio’ version - and while with the original you applied the -1 and -2 Octaves independently, here you can combine the two - or dial them out via their respective Down 1 / 2 controls.
Controls - Down 1 (-1 Oct Level), Dry Level, Down 2 (-1 Oct Level), Filter 1 (280Hz > 7kHz) LPF), Filter 2 (148Hz - 7kHz) LPF).
It’s a pretty cool effect for sure - where possibly it needed a 6th Fuzz Gain control for full granularity. I’m still tempted though. It obviously won’t be as hard hitting as the Honey Badger - while it’s a really elegantly textured sub octaves machine. I will need to ponder on it some more - it’s definitely a maybe for me at the moment!
It is available for orders right now courtesy of the Catalinbread Webstore, and will surely be imminently at dealers too. It currently goes for $199 / £185.
