Readers should know by now that a special edition of the Robert-Keeley-Modded Blues Driver is my favourite all-time Overdrive - the Freak Fuzz edition of BD-2. While Keeley have for a long time been selling their own take of their Phat Modded Blues Driver - as the Super Phat Mod - with all 3 of those legendary editions pictured in the above visual. Note that most of the modded BD-2s out there nowadays are more likely done my Mammoth Electronics - look for a Keeley sticker to indicate Robert has had hands-on on your particular pedal.
I also own a special edition of that pedal - known as the Keeley Retro Super Germanium Phat Mod. While this will be the first time I acquire a more standardised version - not that this is particularly standard as only 1,000 of these will be made. I’m doing a few Andy Timmons features this month - so I’ve ensured that my name is down for one of these red versions.
Controls - Level, Tone, Drive, Mode : AT / Phat.
The key difference for the Super AT Mod is that the toggle-switch has AT and Phat Modes versus the standard’s Flat and Phat.
Keeley describe the new mode as :
"The new AT-mode is voiced for humbuckers and features lower mid-bass frequencies for tighter, more transparent response. The original Keeley PHAT-mode stands ready to put more power behind your favorite single coil equipped guitar. Either way, the Super AT Mod has got you covered."
I actually already use my Freak-Fuzz-Modded Blues Driver mostly on Phat Mode - which I prefer - so it’s nice to have the new AT mode which tightens up and opens up the texture somewhat. May is kind of an Andy Timmons month for me - so I had to have one of these!
Andy Timmons states :
“The Super AT Mod Overdrive is the ultimate expression of the slightly broken up/clean tone I have been searching for all these years. It also rocks with an amazing overdrive tone that is incredibly amp-like. I already have 2 on my board! Wishing you all the best on your Tone Quest!”
I actually quite like the Boss-colours limited edition of the standard pedal (as pictured above-right) - so I might at some stage try to get hold of that one too! (while that currently seems to be sold out).
Pricing on the Super AT Mod will be $199 / €249 / £219 - of course available imminently at leading International dealers - in very limited quantities.
The Boss BD-2 Blues Driver circuit is an incredibly dynamic overdrive which you can really ride your guitar volume on - for pristine clean tones and then immediate ramp up. Lost of pro players just use the Blues Driver as a Drive-off tone-enhancer!
I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on one of these!
