Back when I covered the SuperCharged Update / Reissue last November, I didn’t realise that there were 2 further pedals in that Legacy Collection - the Super Chili Picoso, and the WIIO. The latter we’ve actually seen quite a bit of over the years - a sort of companion pedal to the RAH variant. While I don’t recall having seen the Super Chili Picoso for quite a while.
In any case, and for sake of completion, I felt that I needed to cover all 3 in context. Where the ones I overlooked in Novemeber have it common that they are both MOSFET variants of gain pedals - each with a pretty high octane output on tap!
The SuperCharged sees various cool updates, including a new Tilt EQ, and the former One-knob Super Chili Picoso gets a couple more controls beyond its Boost / Master Volume. Finally we see yet another release of the WIIO Hiwatt style Pedal - which seems to get a fairly regular rotation!
Each of those are optimally priced at $150 - and all are worthy of consideration. Like I said - we’ve seen a lot of the WIIO over the years, while not so much really of the SuperCharged or Super Chili Picoso - which are further improved in these editions. Available at most Catalinbread Dealers - particularly the larger ones.
Here below follow the usual individual details :
Controls - Tilt EQ, Contour (Mids + Resonance), Volume, Gain.
The original was out in circa 2009, a potent, throaty and richly textured 8-Stage MOSFET Overdrive - now with updated tone-stack, including a smart Tilt EQ. In a sea of sound-alike pedals, this one is voiced somewhat differently - sort of adjacent to the Mostortion, but very much its own thing really. This one is most definitely on the cards - as I generally gravitate toward more unusual and sonically distinct overdrives. This is kind of the overdrive equivalent of Catalinbread's super Giygas Fizz.
Controls - Boost Level, Tilt EQ, Gain Structure : Spicy / Mild.
A really potent +35dB Harmonic Colouration MOSFET Boost with smart Tilt EQ, and 2 different gain levels / structures. Really high octave boos essentially with a beautifully textured output. Maximum impact from the least amount of controls!
Controls - Treble, Bass, Post Volume Clean Blend, Master Volume, Gain.
Legendary WHO Live at Leeds 1970 Hiwatt sound - where Pete Townsend used 2 x Hiwatt CP103's alongside a Hiwatt DR103 - for a superbly richly textured soundstage. You kind of have 2 gain controls - with the Post control giving you further Tape Preamp style Saturation. Served by a Baxandall EQ - which altogether deliver a fantastic British style snarling harmonic output. A really interesting take on an amp-in-a-box pedal, with proper extended range!
