I had the privilege of being introduced to Markus Reeves’ heir apparent at the fairly recent Witney Pedal Party event. Markus created the Daughterboard series specifically for Izzy - where he designed the circuit and its vintage style board, and Izzy properly does all the rest - from screen printing and painting the enclosures to assembling each and every pedal in its entirety.
With the Daughterboard Series - Reeves Electro in effect has 3 different series - alongside the existing Point-to-Point hand wired originals, and more recent Tour Grade editions - possibly you can classify the BHS-Deluxe as its own line too.
In any case the Darlington Flyer is a significant departure from what has come before and is now in effect Reeves Electro’s ’entry level’ pedal - where £299 is quite a significant price of admission - so not accessible to all, particularly in the nature of how these pedals are released.
Limited batches of just 10 units typically go up for grabs at a preset time - and the Internet Gods had better be on your side as all the units get snapped up in seconds - and if your Internet isn’t fully turbo’d up at that instant you don’t stand a chance! I’ve had Reeves pedals in my shopping cart before a few times - but someone else’s internet was faster than mine - and I got gazumped at the last millisecond.
It used to be Spaceman Effects that had these anxiety inducing Russian Roulette style quick fire releases - and at times my nerves and pending sense of disappointment just wholly put me off from taking part. It’s a mood thing for me really - sometimes I’m game - but increasingly I get my kicks elsewhere. Also each of my 3 Reeves Electro pedals to date all have copper insides - and I would like to continue that tradition - so most of these events just aren’t that suitable for me.
That said - the next one takes place TOMORROW Saturday 12th at 8PM BST Time - just 10 Darlington Flyer units will be up for grabs then! Of course on the - Reeves Electro Webstore. Make sure you reboot your router, login on the Reeves site and PayPal - have all the necessary details to hand - and your most lightning-responsive gaming mouse and keyboard!
For sure another cool and distinctive fuzz - Markus is such a great circuit-smith and transistor-wrangler that he consistently always delivers unusual and elevated results.
Controls - EQ / Voicing : FAT Controller / Narrow Gauge (Skinny), Master Volume (Fixed Fuzz / Gain), Transistor : Darlington Flyer / Bipolar Junction.
Markus / Izzy describe the Transistors as :
"One is a 1979 Motorola MPSA013 Darlington - for smooth, compressed sustain, the other an early 70’s Micro Electronics ME4003 - for a much more open, gritty and slightly gated feel."
You’ve probably got about a 1 in 1000 chance on Saturday 12th August 8PM BST - to snag one of just 10 made available. Best of luck to all the runners and riders!
I will have to bide my time and wait for Markus to open up his order book once more. There is talk that the Daughterboard series is less complex / quicker to make - and there may be some build up of stock eventually. I do expect to see different colourways at some stage - and hopefully I can get one with copper insides also in the not too distant future!
