So I’ve gone rather rapidly from just a handful of Uni-Vibes to where this Vintage Vibe makes it a baker’s dozen! I really like everything about this Vibe - it’s supremely easy to dial in - and really handy in having 2 different Speed dials - as that’s exactly how I uses this types of pedal - with the first Speed dial wound all the way down, and the second at a reasonable throb of around 3 o’c.
There’s definitely some Marco magic at play here = of course utilising primo components too - where this vibe has a cool clarity you don’t typically get with the more traditional ones - who often can get a bit muddy at times. This is not the same circuit magic as Thorpy’s recent ER-2 as each of those superior Vibes render somewhat differently. The best way I can put it with the Vintage Vibe is that there is a certain sweetness to its output - not exactly the added articulate of the Thorpy ER-2, but and equally successful yet distinct formula.
It’s interesting that all of my vibes have slightly different characters and most of them get a little muddy when you ramp up the Intensity - bar of course this one and the ER-2.
There’s a huge amount of volume and headroom onboard - so I don’t typically find myself going over noon - where that dial is mostly around 11:30 o’c. It’s incredible how open the Vintage Vibe still sounds at Maximum Intensity. I actually have both this and the ER-2 currently on the board - and it’s difficult for me to decide which of those is my favourite really - each has its own distinct advantages.
Since we have 2 Speeds on the Vintage Vibe - it might be nice to add a Ramping knob at some stage - so that we can control the transition between the two speeds in Leslie fashion - that is something the DryBell Vibe Machine does particularly well.
Generally though I think I probably prefer having the seance footswitch as a Speed trigger vs a Chorus / Vibrato switch - as I’m always shifting between speeds on a Uni-Vibe - while only occasionally flip the modes.
Controls - Volume, Intensity, Speed 1, Speed 2, Mode : Chorus / Vibrato, Engage Vibe Footswitch, Speed 1/2 Footswitch.
Preferred Settings - Volume @ 11:30, Intensity @ Max, Speed 1 @ CCW, Speed 2 @ 3 o’c, Mode : Chorus.
The fact that the Formula B Vintage Vibe is just €259 makes it exceedingly good value - probably the best value full-fat Uni-Vibe out there - while the JHS Unicorn V2 is pretty decent also - but is nowhere near as sweet sounding as the Vintage Vibe.
This is one of the best-selling Formula B pedals and is frequently out of stock - while you can of course order one direct from the Formula B Webstore. My good friend Jim Button at Boost Guitar Pedals is the exclusive stockists for the UK - meaning you can of course get one from there too - just arrived fresh back in stock yesterday - UK price tag being an equally reasonable £229.
