Well it’s certainly the Year of Delay now with yet another heavy hitter in the mix! And Brian Wampler has a wonderful knack of loading his workstation pedals with the most fantastic mix of Algorithms. It’s not quite as perfect as the Terraform for me as it’s missing a couple of my own favourite delay algorithms - a Reverse Delay engine, and a Lo-Fi Delay Engine - everything else is pretty much spot on though and provides sufficient variety.
It’s not quite as extreme as the Terraform either with multiple different secondary features per knob - there are some Alt / Secondary features for sure - but they are rather more uniform here. And there’s some really clever stuff - like using the Preset LEDs for Tape Heads also! There’s a small Trails switch on the reverse - just along from the Expression jack. Those of us who know and love the Terraform should have a really easy time with this one too - it’s mostly very intuitive in any case.
I’ve illustrated each Algorithm voicing per what the inspiration was - some slight artistic licence on some of the hybrids :
1 : ANLG - ANALOG STYLE DELAY
Based on a warm, smooth, analog delay very much like the Boss DM-2
2 : WET - MODULATED ANALOG DELAY
Based on chewy and subtly tape-sounding modulation like on the Way Huge Aqua Puss
3 : BBD - BUCKET BRIGADE DELAY
Very Classic BBD Voicing - largely based on the EHX Memory Man
4 : JET - ANALOG FLANGER DELAY
Combines the #1 Analog Algorithm with Additive Flanger Modulation
5 : DOC - WAMPLER ‘THE DOCTOR’
Very much based the warm modulated delay of that Wampler pedal
6 : FTE - WAMPLER ‘FAUX TAPE ECHO’
Brian’s very original take on Tape Echo Delay
7 : ETH - WAMPLER ‘ETHEREAL’ DELAY
Brian’s overlaying twin digital Ethereal delay effect
8 : MOD - DIGITAL FLANGER DELAY
Digital pair to #4 which combines TC2290 style Pristine Digital Delay with Additive Flanger Modulation
9 : SPC - SPACE ECHOPLEX DELAY
A mix of the Space Echo and Echoplex Magnetic Delays with self oscillation capabilities
10 : TAPE - MULTI HEAD TAPE DELAY
Based on the Binson Echorec delay - classic multi-head tape echo
11 : DIGI - DIGITAL DELAY
Pristine Digital Delay based on the legendary TC2290 Rack Delay
The Key Controls
DELAY TIME CONTROL
Time from 25ms to 2000ms - with Tape programme starting at 40ms
FEEDBACK CONTROL
Number of Repeats ALT sets Tape Heads per Presets LEDs for TAPE and ETH Programs
TONE KNOB
See-saw style Bass > Treble EQ, where ALT sets the Modulation Feedback for JET and MOD programs
MOD DEPTH KNOB
Default Modulation Depth, hit ALT to set Modulation Rate
MIX KNOB
100% Dry + 100% Wet at 3 o’c, ALT sets Master Level
TRAILS SWITCH
Set True Bypass or Buffered Bypass (TRAILS) Mode
Readers will know I’m a big fan of Brian’s output, and I for sure could see myself throwing this one into the mix at some stage - of course it needs to wait until the Meris LVX has fully had its turn!
There’s much to like about the Wampler Metaverse - perhaps not quite the perfect mix of algorithms for me - but the ones onboard are all worthy too. This will obviously be a much easier pedal to deploy than the Meris LVX - and most of us are well used to these kinds of Multi-Algorithm workstations by now.
I feel this is a decent catch - and well priced at $349.97
Since I already have the Terraform - I’m more than likely to get this too at some stage. I will of course wait for the Meris LVX to have fully bedded in - and I have also been tempted by the Keeley Halo - so it will be interesting to see which of those lands next!
How abut you dear readers - where are you with your Delay of Choice this year?
