So Brian already has two evolved full-size compact Tube Screamer types - both different modded takes on the TS808 - the 3-knobs plus 2-switches Paisley Drive, and the 5-knobs and 1-switch Clarksdale Overdrive. The Moxie is the first mainstream TS10 derived circuit that I’m aware of - and will obviously target John Mayer fans - who tends to favour this variety of Tube Screamer - usually deployed in tandem with a Klon Centaur.
Controls - Volume, Tone, Gain, Voice : Stock / More Clarity, Fat : Stock / More Fatness.
At its heart - the Moxie is that classic Volume, Tone and Gain 3-knob mid-hump overdrive, while Brian has added 2 further 2-way switches - where the first introduces more Clarity - presumable by reducing compression, while the second switch introduces more Low and Low-Mids to Fatten up the frequency profile. Like the recent Origin Effects Halcyon - the Fat switch is there to compensate for the thinner frequency profile when the pedal is set to lower levels of Volume and Gain. And most Tube Screamer have a certain amount of compression within their output profile - a by-product of that type of clipping typically - where the Voice switch evidently allows you to reduce that to a degree.
I’ve obviously just done an Evolved Compact Tube Screamer overview - where I made one Mini Pedal concession - in the form of the Becos FX Ziffer Mini - which to my mind is still the most impressive mini screamer out there - courtesy of no less than 7 controls! I’m a huge fan of Bran Wampler’s pedals - and I loved his relatively recent Ratsbane - which has an identical control topology to this new Moxie.
The Moxie is currently a nice-to-have for me - I will likely get it at some stage in the future - but not really as any sort of pressing priority. I can then combine it with the Wampler Tummnus Mini or Decibelics Golden Horse Mini for my ultimate compacted John Mayer tone capsule - while I of course already have the Cornerstone Antique V2 which does that within the one compact pedal.
The Moxie Overdrive is available right now on the Wampler Webstore and at leading dealers - for $149.97 and equivalent.
I know there are a number of Brian Wampler and indeed John Mayer fans that read this blog - question is to whom does the Moxie appeal to more?
