It seems like barely a month goes by and we get another fantastic and distinct take on a Compressor - this time from Funk Master Cory Wong - with a little help from Brian Wampler!
This is one of those few signature pedals which is both very artist-specific but also incredibly versatile and smart for everyone else at the same time. It consists of 3 core modes of operation - Compression, Sustain and Boost - which you can bring into effect as and when you need to.
Controls - Attack, Tone, Sustaaiin, Volume, Blend, boOST, Boost Type : Mids / Flat, Ground Lift Button, Compression On Button, Compress Footswitch, Boost Footswitch.
There’s actually two EQ elements here - the Tone (Presence / High), and the type of Boost you assign. You also have a handy Compression On switch which allows you to set the pedal such that Compression is always on - and hece the Compress footswitch is somewhat redundant then.
There’s so much to like here - and I feel this is at least a couple of levels better than Wampler’s core Ego Compressor - which is already excellent. The pedal labelling is so clever here in illustrating each parameter - and the ability to switch in a Mid-hump Boost is a really smart touch.
This has a balanced XLR Out with Ground Lift assignable if you need it - and has all those elements you would want in a compressor - with plenty of additional smarts.
It has some similarities in functions to my JA Bloom Compressor - while that has even smarter switching in some ways - along with a 3-Band EQ which I find essential for my rig. On the Bloom I mostly use the EQ to occasionally carve out some of the low-end - which the featured Wong Compressor cannot too.
As a dedicated Compressor for ’Funk Merchants’ though - the Wong Compressor is nigh perfect. It is for sure one of the more distinct compressors out there - we’re really spoilt for choice these days!
The Wong Compressor goes for $270 near as - and is available now on the Wampler Webstore and imminently at leading dealers. I feel Brian and Cory have totally nailed this one - I think lots of people are going to like it!
Which is your favourite compressor and why?
