I will start off with a little contextual history on Roland and Boss Amplifiers. Obviously Roland is Boss’s parent company and had the initial success with its JC Jazz Chorus amps. On the back of that success it then released a number of wedge-shaped Cube amps - essentially outdoor performer amps - which became the mainstays of journeymen buskers. If you’re out and about in London you will likely see Roland Cubes on every other leading tourist area street corner. So for the longest period it was Roland that was the main amplifier brand in the Group.
However - Boss has had an unprecedented success with its Katana Amplifier range - which now makes that the leading Amp Brand in the group - so a decision was made that the Cube brand would be gradually transitioned across to Boss. Such that some of the formerly ’Cube’ labelled amps are now instead emblazoned with the ’Boss’ logo. This started with the Cube Street model - which was the first one to be absorbed by Boss.
The ’Cube’ range has always been a somewhat ’rugged’ and reliable brand - where those kinds of amps are fairly liberally thrown around as such - in and out of car boots in particular. Traditionally these have been relatively weather and wear-proof outdoor speakers - while the two new Dual Cube LX models are more compact - and designed rather for indoor use - especially suitable if you’re having to changing venues fairly frequently!
Here follows a comparative listing of some of the current and transitioning key Cube-based amps - followed by a group family photo :
Controls - Amp Type : Acoustic Sim / JC Clean / US Combo / Brit Combo / Hi-Gain Stack / Metal Stack / Extreme / Mic / Stereo In, Memory, Gain, Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble, Effects : Off / Chorus / Flanger / Phaser / Tremolo / Heavy Octave, Delay/Reverb : Off / Delay / Reverb / Spring, Tap Tempo, Looper LEDs : Rec | Play | Dub, Mic Volume, Master Volume.
Boss describes this as an ultra-versatile desktop amp with pro tones and effects, expansive stereo sound, and extended range for performing, recording, and livestreaming. Essentially smaller than the Street Cube formats - and intended more for indoor use. These are solid, robust and reliable amps with rugged looks - which should stand up pretty well to a journeyman lifestyle of frequently changing venues!
