My favourite ever octave fuzz is still likely Anasounds’ limited edition Crankled Bitoun Fuzz - which features the combination of Feed Me and Super Fuzz circuits - for the most gloriously thick and searing octave fuzz sounds. Both sides of that equation are fantastic in their own right.
As Anasounds details - their first version of the Feed Me Fuzz Face had 3 controls - Feed, Fuzz and Out, the second had only a Footswitch - with all controls relegated to internal trimmers - which is not entirely to my liking. I got the Crankled Bitoun mostly because more of those controls were externalised. So I really like the MK3 Feed Me Edition - with its 5 external controls, but am a touch disappointed that you need to take the back off to adjust Fuzz / Gain and Bias - would be significantly better if those were somehow externalised too - or at least accessible through holes in the enclosure - like Vemuram do so well.
Controls - Feed (Input Level), Smash (Voltage / Starve : 0-3.8V), Out (Volume), 3-Way Bass / Cut, Crack switch : Up activated Smash / Voltage Starve, Down is Open and full frequency).
This is for sure a really cool extended range version of Fuzz Face - with some rare controls - where the main distinction is the gated voicing triggered by flipping the Crack toggle Up, and adjusting the Smash knob / voltage regulator.
The core of this 2-Transistor circuit is 2 x metal can BC108 Silicon Transistors - which sound really great, and since this falls under Anasounds ’FX Teacher’ range - you can assemble one from a Kit, or else pay a little more for a fully assembled edition. It’s designed for a high degree of modification during assembly - in particular around the Bass 3-way switch where you can slot in different capacitors to taste.
The Kit is priced at €99 and equivalent, while the fully assembled version is €149. I think it sounds really great, and even though I have around 70 Fuzz Faces already, I will still very likely be adding one more! Available right now of course from the Anasounds Webstore.
I’ve never actually been a fan of the classic 2-knob Fuzz Faces that everyone still seems to be so keen on - I typically need a minimum of 3 controls including Bias or Tone typically - overall this pedal is much more my kind of thing - with added depths of detail. Alex and the team certainly know their way around a fuzz. And while it would have been nice to have this in a classic bamboo facia mainline enclosure - I quite like the Smash graphic here - all round a really cool little project!
