So my understanding of this pedal is that it’s supposed to have you covered for most of the key Hendrix Sounds - where right at the core you have a sort of Type III Silicon Fuzz Face circuit with Ring Mod style Upper Octave.
Type III Silicon is the warmer Germanium-like later Silicon Circuit - originally utilising BC183 transistors, and where 2N3904 Transistors deliver similarly warm Germanium-like tones - here rendered via SMT type MMBT3904’s which are exact mini equivalents of the 2N3904’s.
Controls - Tone, EQ (Octave EQ) : Low / High, Octave (Mix), Level, Gain.
At the core of the pedal you get a lovely warm sounding Fuzz Face style voicing - which voicing you achieve by dialling back the Octave. You can then bring the Octave in by degrees for Band of Gypsys and then Octavia style voicings. Upping the Octave and lowering the Gain takes you into obvious Ring Mod territory on higher frets - particularly with the EQ Switch in the down Mid-Boosted Mode. When the EQ Switch is up the overall tone and timbre is somewhat fatter - while down - with the Mid Boost - it’s sharper and more cutting. The EQ switch just brings in a different Capacitor value which literally Boosts the Mid Frequencies of the Ring Mod Octave.
The Love Machine Fuzz sounds pretty great every which way - I do think it could do with a touch more Level / Volume / Output, and I also think that a V2 version of this circuit should have a second footswitch - so you can bypass and activate the Octave more elegantly - versus dialling it out and back in agains via Octave knob.
The Fuzz sounds perfect for me with Level and Gain Maxed, Tone @ 3 o’c, and Octave at either Off (fully CCW) or @ 3 o’c like the Tone.
All-Pedal are masters of aesthetics and high quality finishing - and the wrap-around design with gold-hued milled aluminium knobs is extremely eye-catching - and has a sort of 3D quality to it - including to the touch. My visual shows every facet of the pedal as it’s a really beautiful design. It’s very vintage-correct in its output - which means that the level is a touch lower than is desirable for a modern / contemporary fuzz. It’s engineered for easy placement in your pedal-chain and works well pretty much anywhere.
I really feel that All-Pedal should do a V2 edition with slightly more Volume - and a second Octave Footswitch! Otherwise it’s pretty perfect as is!
Available right now from the All-Pedal Webstore for $199 - and on Reverb.com.
Just a really clever and gorgeous looking all-rounder Hendrix-style fuzz!
