I’ve long been a fan of Mooer’s potent X2 series - which typically has 14 Presets / Algorithms and stereo output alongside 6 controls and dual footswitches - and is the most capable variety of Mooer Compact Pedals. I’ve intended to add a few of these to the reference collection - while to date only the Preamp Model X is in the collection.

Here we have the X2 varieties of the Harmony and Tender Octaver pedals - where I really like the look of the Harmony’s Channel Separation capabilities - which allows you to have an independent Note / Interval on each of the Left and Right Channels - which is fairly unique - and certainly at this level.

The Tender Octaver is slightly less exciting for me - while it’s cool that you have the Sub and Upper Octaves on separate footswitches. While I don’t see that one ever edging out my MXR Poly Blue Octave - which has -1, -2, +1, and +2 octaves simultaneously - with additional fuzz voicing and modulation. So even with its 14 Presets - the Tender Octaver doesn’t excite me as much!

The Harmony X2 though looks pretty cool - while I do of course have alternatives for that in the collection, and it’s something the Eventide H90 already on the board does very well - so we shall see if I ever feel the urge to add that one to the collection - it’s certainly the more likely of the two - while there are other X2’s that I have still to get which I prefer over that one too!

Here follow the individual details :

Harmony Dual-Channel Harmonizer X2 - $169

A pretty cool Harmonizer with 11 separate intervals for Each Left / Right Channel. Intervals vary slightly - in that the Right one starts from a -Octave, while the left starts from -6th. You then select different Major / Minor scales via the usual 7 x 2 Preset Slots - really neat all-round in this particular form factor!

I would probably still prefer to have the EHX Pitch Fork + which has been on my wishlist for a while - but that is a BB size enclosure - where the Harmony X2 is the more pedalboard- and price-friendly!

Controls - Left (Level), Dry (Level), Right (Level), Note L : -6th / -5th / -4th / -3rd / -2nd / +2nd / +3rd / +4th / +5th / +6th / +Oct, Save, Note R : -Oct / -6th / -5th / -4th / -3rd / -2nd / +2nd / +3rd / +4th / +5th / +6th, Presets : Major / Minor : C / D / E / F / G / A / B, Left / Preset Up Footswitch, Right / Preset Down Footswitch.

Features :

  • High-quality pitch processing module
  • 12 pitch options with 11 harmonic modes
  • Two dials for isolated left and right harmonic customization
  • Two dials for left and right harmony volumes
  • Dedicated dial for adjusting the level of dry signal

Tender Octaver X2 - $169

Interesting scale-up from the mini Tender Octaver - obviously with Presets in tow here - and just a simple Octave up and Down - so kind of EHX POG territory I suppose. I've already mentioned that the MXR Poly Blue Octave delivers quite a bit more in the same form factor - having an optional fuzz voicing, as well as modulation. The Tender Octaver X2 does though have the advantage of Presets!

Controls - Sub (Level), Upper (Level), Sub Tone, Upper Tone, Save, Direct (Level), Presets : 1-7 x 2, Sub Engage / Preset Up Footswitch, Upper Engage / Preset Down Footswitch.

Features :

  • Precise octave-shifting DSP algorithm
  • Two octave effect options - subjacent and upper
  • Two effect volume dials, one for each octave
  • A ‘Direct’ dial for adjusting the dry signal volume
  • 14 unique user preset slots
  • A dual-function ‘Save’ button for presets
  • 7 dual-color preset LEDs, with red representing one half of presets, and blue representing the other half
  • Two additional LEDs, indicating the activation status of both octave effects
  • Two footswitches that function both independently and simultaneously  for effect toggling and preset browsing
  • ¼” mono input and output
  • DC 9V power supply
  • Minimalistic and compact casing design
