Readers should know by now that I’m a huge fan of ’King of Fuzz’ John Lyons and his Basic Audio Imprint. I don’t believe anyone is more prolific than John - who has turned his hand to pretty much every fuzz variety there has been over the years. With a superb quality approach which marries practicality with aesthetics, extended features and superior sounds!
His current active pedal range consists of around 40 key fuzz varieties, while over the years he must have made around 100 different varieties and variations of pedals - a pretty incredible achievement all told.
I’ve been collecting Basic Audio Fuzzes for a number of years now - acquiring them from a variety of sources - mostly in the USA, but pretty much the four corners of the globe too - throughout Europe and as far afield as Japan and Singapore!
To-date I have 19 of John’s fuzzes in the collection - exactly the varieties pictured above - in those enclosures / colours :
I’ve often said that John’s flagship fuzz is his superb Scarab Deluxe Silicon Multi-Bender. He should really make a Germanium equivalent of that too - as Germanium is so important to some of that classic Bender timbre and tonality - particularly for MKI types.
I have so many different favourites from those 19 I own - including all the 5-knob varieties - Alter-Destiny, Nonts, Scarab, and Tri/Ram. I’m also particularly keen on the Spooky, Wildcat and Zippy to name just a handful of those. Every one of these sounds superb, and typically delivers quite a bit more than most similar alternatives.
I really love John’s enclosure designs and how those have evolved over the years - and the fact that these are all compact edition enclosures. John does make some BB-size variants too - but for me it’s all about the practicality and versatility of those compact fuzzes!
It was back in 2019 when I did my first proper comprehensive Basic Audio range overview - where I highlighted a mix of 28 fuzzes - some already acquired, and some as identified targets. I wasn't necessarily shooting for those exact enclosure variants - and you can see from the top image as to which variants I actually ended up with!
One of my most fruitful sources for Basic Audio has turned out to be The Sound Parcel, while I've also had success with CoastSonic, Electric Mojo Guitars, Rogue Guitar Shop and SoCal Amplification. Generally Basic Audio pedals typically materialise in small batches and get snapped up incredibly quickly! Currently there are just 26 for sale on Reverb.com.
And beyond the 19 I already have - there are around 33 or so other Basic Audio Fuzz circuits out there - not all of which are in active current production - while I understand that John can be persuaded to make more of his semi-retired fuzzes on a custom basis - as long as he can source the appropriate parts. Those 33 of course include the 9 I didn't yet get from my above / second 28 A-Z Selection visual.
So these are roughly the options I have on where I can go next.
Here follow a few likely candidates - I believe each of these has piqued my interest at some stage - while some are considerably harder to come by than others.
I really like John's expanded range circuits with 5 or more knobs - to better be able to get every ounce of nuance and texture out of said pedal. It also depends on which variants John is willing and able to supply.
I recently made contact with John via his instagram - and he has committed to making some recommendations for me when I send him a follow-up email - in fact which will be based on this article!. It will be interesting to see if the community can guess what John's recommendation/s will likely be, and whether it indeed comes from this selection of 10 likely candidates. I may go for two even!
Do let me know what you would recommend here - and we can then tally that with the final results.
Here then are my 10 most likely front-runners - as always subject to change! :
These are followed by demos of those for which I was able to find YouTube videos for - or 6 of the 10 candidates :
