You would not know from the Magnetic Effects Instagram Page that there was a new V4 version of the White Atom out - I came across it quite by accident - and there are no demos out for it yet either, with the pedal already out of stock on the Magnetic Effects Webstore. In fact the whole range seems to be weirdly out of stock at the moment! Possibly there is a secret mailing list somewhere that I don’t know about!

I have had a long relationship with the White Atom - where I joined that journey with the 2nd iteration of the 4-knob edition, and currently have the 5-knob V3 edition. Which I often recommend on this site as the perfect first and everyday fuzz. It’s a Hybrid variety, and I would presume that the latest edition would be similar in makeup to my own V3 - which has 1 x Soviet П416Б Germanium Transistor, 1 x Metal Can Silicon BC177B, and 1 x standard TO-92 Plastic 2N7000 MOSFET. There are also a couple of TL072CP opamps in the mix for other functions presumably - including tone stack?.

I believe next year will be the official 10th Anniversary of the White Atom where the V1 and V2 had a single Tone control, V3 branched out into Bass and Treble Controls, and the V4 now has Bass, Mids and Treble - for ultimate tone-shaping. The EQ is Active - cut/boost, and alongside the Texture control - which is really a sort of Bias - gives you an amazing range of tones - and obviously textures. The White Atom can go velcro and rough and raspy and sustaining with ease and pretty much everything in-between - just a lot of variety onboard.

The White Atom has always been one of the easiest fuzzes to dial in, which is why I always recommend it to fuzz newcomers. It very happily straddles Fuzz Face and Tone Bender style tones and delivers much more besides. With a ticket price of just £145 - there are few fuzzes that are quite so universally appealing. I own a number of Christian Livingstone pedals - I think I’m up to 8 Magnetic Effects pedals now - mostly fuzzes - and I would certainly be looking to snag a V4 White Atom when it comes back into stock - hopefully very early next year.

I know there are lots of White Atom fans out there - who has one of the earlier versions of these?

In anticipation I will leave you with a couple of the demos for the V3 - just to whet your appetite for next year! I’ve picked the Mike Hermans and Alberto Barrero demos to showcase / give you the maximum spread of possible tones - Enjoy!
