I’m of course delighted by the prospect of another cool take on my favourite overdrive format - Boss’s BD-2 Blues Driver. While I would imagine those that bought the fairly recent limited edition Super AT Mod might be a little miffed - as this Muse Driver is in essence an improvement of that circuit - with an extra 2-way toggle switch - following the format of the very recent Noble Screamer runaway success - where there is also another overdrive in that format which has been leaked, and is due imminently too. The word on the street is that the 3rd in the series is likely a mashup of the Blues Breaker and either OCD or Timmy circuits!
In any case back to the Muse Driver - which I really do like everything about - apart from the fact that I’m in the final steps of completing my Blues Driver variants article - and here we have yet another fresh variant - I’m thinking now that I will swap out the Super AT Mod in that article - for this newer Muse Driver which surely replaces it.
So you have the core Blues Driver circuit’s main 3 controls - Tone, Drive and Level, but then you also get Tone Mod Options, alongside Drive Clipping Mod Options. The Tone one is very straight forward and is really about how much low end you want in the circuit - Less a la AT, or more - with Robert’s signature ’Phat’ Mod for the RK side.
For the Drive Clipping Mods, the AT Mod gives you Asymmetrical LED and Silicon Diodes - for high articulation and note clarity, while the RT Mod delivers a smoother fuzzier voicing via Dual Germanium Diodes. So as with the Noble Screamer you get 4 playback options here - Both toggles up, both down, left up + right down, and left down + right up - hence the 4-in-1 byline.
I feel alas that this kind of obsoletes the Super AT Mod - unless I’m missing something here! Which means that those who recently invested in that particular pedal may be a little peeved - possibly they deserve a discount on the new one! As I love everything to do with the Blues Driver format - I will certainly be getting one of these Muse Drivers - in some ways I just wish that this could have been the first Signature Andy Timmons Keeley overdrive!
The Muse Driver is of course available for orders from the Keeley Electronics Webstore - where it goes for $199 | €259 | £209 and equivalent. And it should be available imminently at International dealers. Interestingly it’s currently cheaper for me to buy the Noble Screamer from Thomann in Germany - £198, versus getting it from Andertons in my home country for £215.
As mentioned, I will certainly be getting a Muse Driver, while it does pain me slightly that my Super AT Mod will likely be reduced to shelf-ware as a result!
How do you all feel about this - and will you be getting a Muse Driver - especially those of you who have the Super AT Mod already?
