Black Mass’s Kaden describes his wish to create a super-textured aggressive and raucous fuzz with the minimal of controls and maximum of flavour. The end result being this suitably glorious sounding one-knob and 2-switches Kill Chain variety - which significantly relies on your guitar controls for shaping the output.
Controls - Level (Degree of Volume and Treble - increases CW), Treble Bleed : More Compression + Grit + Treble / Attenuated Treble + Crushingly Loud, Depth (Bass Boost) : More / Least / Most.
The first switch accentuates the Treble component / Compression or Output Volume, while the second switch controls how much bass frequency goes into the circuit.
I’ve covered numerous times before - the pros and cons of One-knob pedals - where they’re obviously simple to use, but require you to ’tune in’ a little with your guitar volume and tone knobs when you engage. In this instance the gain is maxed out as default and you simply raise the degree of output volume and treble as you crank the one dial. To attenuate Gain and Treble further you use you guitar’s Volume and Tone controls for more refined cleanup.
I have a fair few one-knob wonders in the collection already - and this one looks like another likely addition to said reference collection. It should be incoming to my friend Andy Birkitt’s Break the Machine Boutique soon enough - where I will be getting mine from.
Otherwise these are usually available via the Black Mass Electronics Webstore for $135 and equivalent - while right now they’re out of stock - should be restocked soon enough though!
Are you guys fans of One-knob pedals - and which is your favourite fuzz variety of that kind?
