It’s that time of year when I pick out my personal favourite pedals in each category - starting with the Boost and Overdrive ones. I weigh up each candidate on the basis of my own experiences, preferences and sensibilities - and include pedals also that I intended to get but did not quite yet around to acquiring during the year of release!
For this selection I personally own all but these 8 :
November has been a crazy month! With such a flurry of activity from around the middle of the month onwards. So many companies took full advantage of Black Friday promotions - and the smartest of them started early, and extended their campaign through to the 2nd or 6th of December - in order to be able to take advantage of 2 pay packets!
If you started your Black Friday sales with just a week to go or less - then alas you’re bang out of touch with the new paradigm shift. The early bird ...
My good friend Guillem is never one to do things by halves - especially when working on next level Hi-Fidelity Mini Format pedals. His Golden Horse, Reverend, and Angry Swede are already legendary, and here we have another one to join them on that lofty podium.
These magical creations will compete with any size pedal - where the Reverend and Angry Swede are already extended formats, and we may still get a Golden Horse with a couple of toggles - like its new Rivus Sibling.
I was very ...
So this incredibly busy month was supposed to be all about Tremolos, culminating with the Rounder Sounds Zebra-Trem Review and 30 Tremolo Pedal Overview. But we hit some snags along the way - the Zebra-Trem was mysteriously held up in customs for a week, and then got slightly lost in the local postal network. And when it did finally arrive - evidently it had been dropped a few times, as the screen was no longer working. After trying various obvious remedies with Bill over a few days - with no ...
So I said I would expand the scope of the 10 Pedal Challenge to Mini and Large Enclosure variants if the original was well received. And in indeed that seems to be the case - with several readers encouraging me in particular to do the Large Pedals Edition.
So of course I’ve done the 2 remaining categories - Mini and Large! The Large Pedals were pretty much all obvious choices really and that board largely suggested itself. It was the Mini Pedals version that took the most cogitation!
It...
So I’m a little later than most in getting my Reverend 2 - but that is because in the same shipment it included Decibelics’ next wonder pedal - which is due for release at the end of October. The Reverend V1 Mini Expandora was already a fantastic pedal - squeezing the complex Bixonic Expandora into a mini enclosure - and delivering more even and consistent output across all 4 modes - Crunch, Overdrive, Distortion, and Forbidden Fuzz!
I know of few pedals more potent across the gain range ...
Ryan (Clarke) of Dr Scientist is actually responsible for this article for the most part. He mis-identified my previous ’World Odyssey’ article as a Fuzz roundup - and referred to it as the ’Fuzz Pedal Olympics’ - which it really wasn’t although Fuzz as probably the biggest overall category / genre in that roundup - or 7/25. In any case I decided that for Ryan’s sake - we had better have that ’Fuzz Pedal Olympics’ proper - which this finally is! And obviously the 7 Fuzzes from the previous ...
Apologies that his is a little late - it took and age to research, compile and complete - and is filled with myriad wonderful fun facts - I sincerely hope you enjoy this one - as a whole heap of work has gone into bringing it to you!
So I spent the whole weekend working on updating my pedal inventory records to figure out exactly where I was at with the Reference Collection, the last time I did that exercise was a couple of years ago. I had kind of mentally estimated that I had around 1.300...
The original Reverend was already a phenomenal multi-stage gain pedal - the result of an intense 4 year development project that I was fortunate enough to participate in.
The fact that my good friend Guillem managed to squeeze everything into such a tiny enclosure is simply a latter-day engineering marvel, and the pedal truly sounds superb. We spent a lot of time A/B-ing different OpAmps to establish which one was consistently great and the the overall greatest sounding across all 4 modes. ...
It seems fitting that with all this talk of the recent Wampler Germanium Tumnus Deluxe - that we should take a minute to marvel at this still incredible feat of miniature engineering prowess - which has had those magical 1N34A Germanium Diodes onboard from the start! I’m not going to focus too much on the superior component selection of All Mojo Parts, but rather note the neatness and incredible fidelity of the execution.
The Decibelics Golden Horse first appeared in May of 2017 in a batch ...
