I’ve long been a fan of Jesse Davey’s King Tone output - principally Overdrive, Fuzz, and Vibe in the main.
In fact I’ve owned the miniFUZZ Ge for several years - where the intention was always to get the matching miniFUZZ Si pedal - that just hasn’t happen yet, not have I acquired the Octaland - where I’ve been aiming to get the 3 fuzzes and The Duellist - which finally happened a couple of weeks ago.
Currently I believe there is only one stockists in the UK - Peach Guitar - and a lot of the time they have little or no stock. Note also that my friend Sebastian Nylynd also stocks these at TGT11!At one stage I was considering the Soloist + HeavyHand combination- but all the added dip-switch options on the new 2022 edition made more sense to get that particular version. I seem to be steadily acquiring all the key dual-channel Blues Breakers these days! In fact I have a really cool compact Demiurge ’Teras’ edition of The Duellist which sounds immense.
Everything Jesse does is high quality - while I don’t necessarily feel I need the whole range - I’m currently aiming for 4 - where I’m hoping to get a miniFUZZ Si next!
Aesthetically these pedals are exceptional for sure - but somewhat pricey too!
Long term I think I’ll be happy with :
For the others I have different preferences - where the Horrothia Berkeley is probably my Favourite medium box Uni-Vibe, followed by the Formula B Vintage Vibe.
Readers will know that I typically favour compact editions - which is the case here - besides the new Duellist.
Here follow the individual details :
Controls - String-Singer} Drive-A, Volume, Tone, Mode : Fat / Stock / Glass, Dips : Vintage TS / SRV Mod, Classic / Amp-Like, Symmetric / Asymmetric Clipping ; Heavy-Hand } Drive-B, Volume, Tone, Mode : Fat / Stock / Glass, Classic / Amp-Like, Distortion / Overdrive, Symmetric / Asymmetric Clipping, Channel Order : A-B / B-A.
The Duellist has long been a favourite of Mick Taylor of TPS, while I have had the King of Tone - JHS 4-Star Mod for years, so I never felt I particularly needed a Duellist per say - as I was already covered. The addition of all those dip-switch options for the more attractive silver edition - with part-wooden knobs - actually put it o the map for me - as I always like extended feature editions - and in some ways the new Duellist sort of overtakes the King of Tone on versatility.
I was determined to get a silver edition of the 2022 model - and had to wait a fairly lengthy time for Peach Guitars to get it in stock. The don't seem to have had a miniFuzz or Octaland in stock for the longest time!
This is of course one of the reference Blues-Breaker -based Dual-Drives- with a TS808 voicing on one channel, and a Blues-Breaker voicing on the other. I'm aiming for 7 Dual-Drive Blues-Breakers - where I currently have 5 - King Tone Duellist, King of Tone, VS Audio Royal Flush Ltd Edition, Demiruge Teras Limited Edition Dual-Drive, and Limited Edition / Modded Keeley D&M Drive.
I still have the Matthes Effects Compact The Broker to get, and a Browne Amps Protein - where I'm really waiting for a special edition of that to make it properly worthwhile.
Once I have all 7 I will do another follow-up post!
Controls - Drive, Level, Body, Tone, Mode : Edge / Glass / Stock, Mode 2 : Stock / Open / Comp.
For a while I was considering whether I should go for the two stand-alone compact overdrives - vs the combined The Duellist. With all the added smarts of the 2022 Duellist Edition - it really makes more sense to get the 2-in-1 pedal - which is what I've done.
I have quite the number of Blues Breaker style compact format pedals - so I really don't need any more. On this occasion overall the Duellist makes more sense for me!
Controls - Drive, Volume, Body, Tone, Mode : Edge / Stock / Glass.
And here is the other stand-alone pedal side of The Duellist - namely the TS808 / SRV voicing. You of course sort of get 4 knobs on the stand alone pedals versus 3 on the 2-in-1, while you have a lot more Mode and Voicing Options on the new Duellist overall.
I may revisit this at some stage - for now, I feel that The Duellist is the King Tone Flagship - and the 2022 version is the one to own versus the individual ones.
Of course results may vary, and for some the stadn-alones make more sense. Quite frankly - it's nice to have the choice!
I may revisit this in a year or two, while for now - The Duellist 2002 is the one to have as far as I'm concerned!
Controls - Drive, Volume, Clean, Tone, Mode : Full/Fat / Vintage / Overdrive.
A cool Germanium Treble Booster / RangeMaster is a similar format to the other stand-along overdrives - 4 x knobs, and 3-way mode switch essentially for maximum versatility and impact.
I have several Treble Boosters in the collection already - so I definitely don't nee another. Were I considering adding one more - then this one would surely be up for consideration too - while it's enclosure format is somewhat different to the other King Tones for whatever reason!
Controls - Volume, Mode : Fat/Full / Zonk / Vintage, Bias, Fuzz.
My very first King Tone pedal which has been in the collection for a few years now. Note that these are now proper Newmarket NKT275 but rather some modern reissues - while they still sound pretty decent actually.
This miniFuzz has a really smart Auto-Biasing circuit which you can then manually tweak if you wish too. Really quite clever all-round - and it sounds pretty decent indeed.
These miniFUZZES have a few more playback options and modes to them than the average Fuzz Face - and these are really rather very pretty.
I've wanted the Si / Silicon pair to this one for a while - but they are somewhat out of stock at both King Tone and Peach Guitars. And those currently available on Reverb.com are somewhat inflated in price.
I'm still hoping to land one at the right price - but it will inevitably involve a lot of hunting around - and some considerable luck!
Controls - Volume, Mode : Fat/Full / Zonk / Vintage, Bias, Fuzz,
And here is the silicon pair to the miniFUZZ Ge - utilising Type III BC183 transistors - the most 'Germanium-sounding' of the Silicon Transistors.
It has essentially the self same controls as on the Germanium edition - albeit not the auto-bias circuitry.
The miniFUZZ Si is near enough as versatile as the Germanium variety,
Hopefully theses will come back into stock soon!
Controls - Drive, Volume, Blend, Voice, Mode : Full/Fat / Glass / Vintage.
An Octavia / Band of Gypsys style Hendrix fuzz - with several additional internal options.
It doesn't say whether this is Germanium or Silicon - so more likely the latter, and wile there are quite a number of controls on this pedal - this still seems like somewhat of a pricey proposition at $299,00!
I still quite like the looks of this one - and will look to add one eventually, wile I do consider it to be relatively expensive all-told!
Most of the compact pedals seems to be in black nowadays - while I really like the previous blue Octaland colourway!
What say you?
Controls - Volume, Q1 : AC128 / NKT275, Q2 : AC128 / NKT275, Fuzz, Bias.
This seems to be a Vintage Dual Channel Germanium Fuzz which allows you to switch between AC128 and NKT275 on each of the 2 Q1 and Q2 gain stages.
Overall we have relatively few controls here - while I consider this a somewhat oversized version of DanDrive's Austin Pride Texas Square Face Fuzz - that allows you to switch between Germanium and Silicon Transistors on each Gain Stage - delivery maximum versatility and variety in the one enclosure.
The Vintage Fuzz Is cool for sure - but there are quite a few compact editions with do the same sort of things in a more slick manner!
Controls - A} Rate A (Symmetry), Depth A (Bulb), Mode : Vibrato / Chorus; B} Depth B (Bulb), Rate B (Symmetry), Mode : Vibrato / Chorus, Channel A/B Footswitch, Bypass Footswitch.
A really cool 2-in-1 / 2-Channel Uni-Vibe with 3 controls per side - and the ability to flip between then - Channel A / B.
Very much 2 x Vibes in 1 - which you can see by the lofty price of $500!.
This is a really clever Uni-Vibe - but I really prefer it more of a Vertical BB-Size orientation.
Currently my favourite Uni-Vibe is the compact DryBell Vibe Machine, while I also really like the vertical mid-size Horrothia Berkeley, and Formula B Vintage Vibe.
The 1968 is for sure one of the greats - but it's also somewhat pricey too - and not in the absolute handiest of form-factors - still very cool if you can afford and accommodate one!
Controls -Volume, Tone, Drive, Mode : Vintage / Glass / Fat/Full.
I believe this is the original and now discontinued Octaland Fuzz in larger BB-size enclosure.
Same price but fewer controls that the later more capable compact edition.
Sounds good - but surely this form factor has been consigned to history now!
Some really cool Fuzz and Drive pedals here for sure - particularly the 4 I have my eye one - including of course the two I have already.
I will look to het the Silicon miniFUZZ first, and then a blue enclosure Octaland shortly after.
I would imagine that Jesse will streamline his rang at some stage - makes sense to transition some of theses horizontal BB-form factor pedals to Vertical and Compact dimensions.
I do hope the miniFUZZES haven't been discontinued as I've not seen any of those doing the rounds for a while.
The 2022 Duellist is obviously the Flagship / start of the show, and Jesse right seems to be focusing on that for now.
I personally find the Silver edition far more attractive Thant the black - and that's the one I recommend!
