The Ibanez MT10 Mostortion was part of the 10 series which also saw John Mayer’s favourite Tube Screamer - this ’10’ Power series was made by Maxon from 1986 to 1989. I did a feature back in 2020 on some key Mostortion pedals available at that time - I had picked up the Danelectro Roebuck just around then. I also added a Drunk Beaver Kharkiv CMOStortion last year, so this Wampler Mofetta would be my 3rd.

I still want the 3rd Power one - the updated Love Drive edition if that’s still around, I’ve actually tried to snag an original Mostortion - I did find one once which was at the right price and condition - but someone got in there just a split second before me! Generally the decent conditions Mostortions are still priced way too high - and most of those listed are in very variable condition.

And so - this morning at 08:50 BST I received a very cryptic email from Brian Wampler hinting at a new pedal release. The Wampler site link did not work then, but the Reverb.com link immediately took me to that product page, and even though the budget was blown for this month, I could not pass up on this particular pedal - for which only 600 have been made (so far!). With numbers like that - time is of the essence! As of writing, the Reverb listing is all sold out, while the later materialising Wamplerpedals.com page still seems to have some units remaining as of my writing this. 600 units is not a lot - and yesterday the new compact Diamond Pedals Vibrato sold out the first batch of 800 in just about an hour or two I think it was.

Controls - Bass, Mids, Treble, Level, Texture : Stock Silicon / MOSFET, Gain.

This is a pretty faithful take on the Mostortion circuit at its core, of course with Brian’s own refinements. The standard clipping on the Mostortion was Silicon Diodes, while here Brian has a ’Texture’ switch which switches in a fairly unique MOSFET Clipping - which jumps up the gain quite a bit - for solo lead sounds!

I’ve long called Brian ’The King of Drive’, where some have it as Nick Greer, while for me - my man has always been Brian. I got some of my best ever Blues Breaker tones with his Pantheon - I think I own about 10 of his all in. I definitely wanted some more Mostortions in the collection, and I must surely have been one of the first to order one as my order confirmation came though at 08:57 BST.

This is a rare instance when I did not even check out the demos first. I generally don’t recommend that sort of thing, while Brian has not let me down yet - with all the pedals of his that I own - of course mostly overdrives and distortions - and the Terraform!

If you can still get your hands on one of these - then WamplerPedals.com is your best bet, the Reverb.com listing sold out at around 14:00 BST as far as I’m aware. These are a very reasonable price at $199.97, with a rather handsome colourway and Aztec Calendar graphic. I also much prefer these knurled black aluminium knobs to the regular Wampler DM-1510 ones!

Actually in reading the details of the text (which I skimmed though all too quickly!) - it’s only the first batch that is 600 units :

"We made 600 of these for this run, so get in early if you’re interested. If these sell out we will make a new batch, but that process takes a few months."

I’m excited to get my hands on mine - no idea when these are being shipped!
