Back in August of last year Thorpy and Andertons collaborated on a vintage-inspired Anniversary pedal in an Andertons Sparkle Blue Enclosure - which was a limited run of only 200 pedals - and only available direct from Andertons.
The Tremolo side was designed by Dan Coggins when he was just a 14 year old, while the MKI Fuzz Side is another Thorpy classic Fuzz - and a kind of teaser / preview for the eventual Silicon Boneyard Edition - whenever that gets released!
Both circuits are really special - the Silicon Fuzz is unerringly close in texture to a Germanium original Tone Bender, and the Tremolo has the most exquisite decay - which fades away beautifully elegantly into the background.
Each side is controlled by just 2 controls a piece, where I feel it would have been nice to have had a third one for each - for more variety and versatility - while those overall 4 controls still do a great job!
Controls - TREM } Speed, Depth, Trem Footswitch; FUZZ } Level, Attack, Fuzz Footswitch,.
Because of its vintage nature - this pedal has to be right at the front of your signal chain - and cannot come after any sort of buffer! Note also the the Fuzz Attack and Level rise very quickly where 9 o'c on the Attack is already plenty, as is around noon for Level. The controls for the Tremolo are rather more regularly and predictably tapered.
I've had mine since August obviously - the two editions have identical internals - the only difference is the colour of enclosure, and the coverage of those front facia contour lines - which on the original marked out Andertons' relative position within Guildford, while the new one kind of reveals the location of the Thorpy Secret bunker - but you will never get there without the most exacting and detailed instructions! It's hidden away at the back of some vast tract of farmland - in amongst a handful of other small engineering companies. Just Thorpy's personalised number plate might give the game away - but I believe that's currently reserved for the weekend runaround!
I'm generally a big fan of Trem-Fuzzes - and this one is among the very best of that kind. Both sides are really strong on their own, and combine beautifully together!
In some ways I actually prefer the elegance of the new Silver Sparkle Colourway. In any case he price has remained the same - at £249 / $299 / €289. Actually really good value at those prices. Whichever way you look at it - you're getting 2 pedals essentially for the price of one - and those consist of a beautifully decaying tremolo and expressively textured classic fuzz - well worth an investment.
This was one of my favourites from last year, and I'm delighted more people can get their hands on one now. Should be hitting all points of distribution very soon - this is now a mainline release - so there will be plenty for all who want one! I still expect them to sell through rather rapidly!
