I’m a huge fan of High Gain Doom Sludge Distortion Pedals - and already have several favourites in that category - including the Blackhawk Balrog, Earthbound Audio Supercollider, Lichtlaerm Audio Altar, and even the recent JHS Pedals Hard Drive.
The Cannibal Unicorn hits slightly differently - as even at full tilt it doesn’t get as boomy and saturated as the others - but combines its sludge with superior note clarity. This is a fairly distinct voicing, with unique abilities, while some of the others do hit somewhat harder.
Controls - Volume, Bass, Main Gain, EBM (Everything But Metal - 550Hz, Treble, Clarity (Bass Cut), Gain 1 (Additional Gain and Saturation).
Preferred Settings - Volume, Bass, Main Gain, and Gain 1 all on MAX (CW), EBM @ noon, Treble @ 10 o’c, and Clarity on Min (CCW).
With most dials sort of maxed out (per the above settings) this pedal sounds really superb. I weirdly seem to prefer the EBM control right slap bang in the middle neutral position. My only tiny quibble really is that I could do with a bit more output volume. Otherwise this is a richly textured and cleverly honed distortion.
The Cannibal Unicorn is a really smart Doom / Sludge pedal - which tempers that high gain distortion flavour with exceptional articulation.
For a limited time you can get a 'Bundle' consisting of the Pedal, a T-Shirt and a Sticker - all for the same price as the pedal on its own. So you could just buy the pedal on its own for $199, but it makes more sense to get the bundle at the same price. Available right now via the Electric Eye Audio Webstore.
This is overall a somewhat distinctly different Doom / Sludge pedal, which a lot of players seem to like already. For me it's unusual look is really part of its appeal - it looks quite different aesthetics wise to the previous Electric Eye pedals.
Some really smart engineering here by my good friend Silas!
