There’s been no shortage of recent great sounding mini overdrive pedals, and Pigtronix adds yet another intriguing variant into the mix. I believe this is a new circuit which combines Germanium, LED and Silicon Diodes for a fairly unique Asymmetric Diode Clipping.
Controls - Volume, Gain, Treble (active 2kHz±), Bass (active 80Hz±).
So the Gamma Drive combines unique clipping with 2-Band Active Baxandall EQ to deliver richly textured 2nd order harmonics. The sweet, blooming output ranges from sparkling clean boost to a fairly raging distortion. The Gamma Drive has been designed for versatile playing across a wide variety of musical genres.
This is a really dynamic overdrive with copious amounts of touch-sensitivity for really nuanced playback. Readers will recall that I’m a big fan of a sub-genre that I call Harmonic Overdrives - and this is a perfect example of that!
This one definitely goes down on the acquisitions / wishlist - but it’s tricky to figure out exactly where it lies within my order of priorities - as I have several minis to get now - including a handful of Menatone ones and the recent Becos FX Ziffer Overdrive.
There are still some great OneControl, F-Pedals, and Wampler varieties I never quite got around to acquiring either - so I have no clear idea on when I might add this Gamma Drive - I tend to be be fairly opportunist about those acquisitions - and if I can get any of those at a reasonable discount they get priority treatment!
Any of you like the look of the Gamma Drive?
