So far OBNE has given us the BL-44 Reverse Effect, BL-82 Chorusing Delay, and BL-37 Ethereal Reverb - all based on the same circuit topology and enclosure format. Its newest BL-52 Phase Repeater is actually its second of that type after its 2018 ’Dweller’ pedal - where a Phase Repeater is defined as a sort of Multi-FX - which can sound like a Phaser, Delay, or Reverb depending on a single knob’s relative position (or Slider as is the case here).
The BL-52 Phase Repeater’s Clock control sets the timing of the entire system : the sample rate that determines signal fidelity, the timing of the phase repetition and the speed of the LFO that shapes the diffusion of the repetition. So you’re in effect changing several variables at the same time - which impact on signal fidelity / LFO speed and the like!
Controls - Mix (Dry > Wet), Volume / Output, Clock : Diffused Delay > Faster Repeats / Flutter, Feedback (Trails / Decay).
I quite like the Clock Slider concept - but worry if others are getting repetition fatigue based on a very similar design over and over again. To an extent that for me - from a distance - the first 3 are difficult to tell apart, while the colourway of the new one makes it more easily identifiable.
These are for sure cool pedals - whose inherent simplicity makes them incredibly hands-on and potent.
The OBNE BL-52 Phase Repeater is available right now on the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Webstore for $179 and imminently at leading international dealers. There’s also a Blacked Out version of this pedal available as part of the Reverb.com Black Friday Blacked Out Editions.
