Named after a famous mountain range in Norway, the subject of Edvard Grieg’s ’Hall of the Mountain King’ and home to 6 millennia of civilisation. The Dovre combines the Spring Reverb voicing from the recent MIME II pedal with Daniel’s 7th and most satisfying take on the Silicon Fuzz Face circuit. We have had variations of the Fuzz Face across 3 generations of Berserk Fuzzes, and across the Kvasir, SOL, and Måne. Where Daniel now believes he’s arrived at the most dynamic and flavoursome version to-date.
He describes the Reverb side as being a sort of carrier for the Fuzz - which accentuates that and helps it cut through the mix - alongside adding a significant degree of sustain.
Both sides are highly dynamic and nuanced - with plenty of range onboard, and you can do interesting things with each channel individually as well as in combination.
For me there are parallels here with the recent Rainger FX Pull Focus - which is rather a distortion circuit with sustaining chorus and reverb, and with an offset element to it. For the Dovre the core voicings are quite different - while both those pedals are highly dynamic and the 2 sides combine beautifully across several different sweet spots. You can use the Reverb as an interesting boost into other pedals on its own - again with that carrier mechanic which adds subtle textures into that combination pedal, and helps sustain and carry its tone further.
You have a single master control for each channel - the Fuzz one is mostly just output - but you get increased compression also as that rises, and for the Reverb it’s about the length of its sustain / decay. Both those dials have quite a bit more range than you might need to use - where I personally did not go much above 3 o’c on both. The Fuzz Face circuit reacts beautifully to your guitar volume control - and you can use that to further fine-tune the ratio / relationship between the Fuzz and the Spring Reverb.
Daniel has emphasised the player dynamics here - where this is definitely about how that pedal carries your tone further and lets your fuzz voicing soar through the mix when it needs to, while otherwise being dialled back all the way to clean!
Controls - SPRING REVERB } Reverb Master / Decay Length, Reverb Footswitch; SILICON FUZZ FACE } Fuzz Master / Output, Fuzz Footswitch.
It’s one of those simple but mighty pedals - which harks back to some of Daniel’s earliest fuzz experiments. You can think of this pedal as being just a really potent Fuzz Face with the addition of potent Spring Reverb voicing - or you can think of this being more of an enhanced fuzz experience - where the reverb helps shape the tone and sear, and degree of sustain for the fuzz - that is how this pedal was intended to operate - allowing you to cleverly enhance the fuzz voicing in a dynamic on-the-fly manner.
The Dovre Fuzz-Verb is priced at $249 on the Fjord Fuzz Webstore, and will be imminently appearing at leading dealers too. The combine Gloss/Matt Black enclosure with Black Footswitches is the version to get!
