So this is a sort of Hybrid take on the OCD, where Volodymyr tells me the tone stack is circa OCD 1.3, while the various constituents and components are a mix covering 1.4 / 1.7 / 2.0 and GE variants in the main. The Albert is kind of an Omni-OCD in a sense - with that extra Boost, a little similar to the Tephra without being independent, alongside a handy phat Bass Boost.
Some still get confused by the HP / LP controls - which simply stand for High Peak and Low Peak - where in the down position you’re applying a Shelving Low-Pass Filter or Hi-Cut. This means the LP setting manifests as slightly lower gain, and more lo-fi of sorts. It’s similar to certain Skreddy Pedals - where you have an SC/HB switch - meaning Single Coils / Humbuckers - and where each Mode is kind of optimal for each of those pickup output profiles - in many ways similar to the HP/LP setting on the OCD and Albert.
Everything else is very straightforward - MOSFET is Standard OCD, and GE delivers that version of the OCD Pedal, where beyond the output Boost Function - the phat Bass Boost is the other key extra here.
Controls - Volume, Filter : High Peak / Low Peak (LPF Shelving Filter), Tone, Drive, Clipping : MOSFET (Standard) / GE (OCD GE), EQ : Fat / Standard, Boost (up to +30dB on HP Mode), Bypass Footswitch, Boost Footswitch.
Some have said that this variant of Albert renders an entirely new circuit - while it’s for sure OCD-derived for me - and gives you an enhanced and extended range delivery of that core classic kind of Marshall-y style crunchy output. I’ve always liked the crunchier side of this pedal the most - while there are many who prefer its smoother output side. Running more in LP Mode definitely renders smoother.
With the extra features - you can take this pedal into areas that your typical OCD just won’t reach. Interestingly even though it has an output boost circuit similar to the Tephra - it doesn’t render quite so massive here, nor can it operate independently - unlike on the Tephra. It’s still pretty potent though and is capable of a similar +30dB extension on the HP Mode - HP means more brightness, more gain and more sizzle - so in LP Mode the brightness and gain are somewhat rolled back, and the ’sizzle’ is no longer evident!
There is decent enough guitar volume cleanup here to notch the gain back a touch, where as I prefer the crunchier side of things - my settings are around - Volume, Tone and Drive all @ 2 o’c, HP Mode, GE On, Fat On, Boost @ Max - and where the Boost is mainly applied as a solo boost!
The Albert is part of my Sentimental Bob Electronics Trifecta - alongside the Tephra and Tacana - all are available for order on the Sentimental Bob Electronics Reverb.Com Store and are each around $180-190 including delivery. Note that they are built to order - which can typically take 1-2 weeks, and then another week or 2 for shipping - which means that you should allow for about a month from payment to doorstep delivery!
All 3 of my Sentimental Bob Pedals are superb - and each is among the very favourites of its kind - where I’m particularly impressed by the Tephra overall!
