This is a sort of Bonus round follow-up to my recent JHS PackRat feature - where a reader commented that surely the Muffuletta needed to be brought up to spec with the other two - with a full 9 circuit modes.
I’ve featured a number of Big Muff articles on this blog - and this exercise was a simple one for me really - adding 3 more modes to reflect all my own personal favourite Muff varieties. So we add a Violet Ram’s Head, OpAmp / IC version as popularised by Billy Corgan, and split out the former Russian Mode to Green and Black varieties. Of course Josh has put out the Red Army Overdrive version too - which most agree is pretty much identical to the Civil War edition. And there is also a choice of a 1977 V3 Pi or the latter slightly beefed up 2000 V9 NYC Pi. In my mockup I’ve referenced the latter - but it’s not a big deal for me - either will do there!
And then like the Bonsai and PackRat - I’ve arranged the modes in chronological order of timeline. Josh could also drop one of those flavours and put in the fabulous Skreddy Mayonaise - that’s also a possibility for a more modern take on Triangle. Note that the Violet edition of Rams Head is slightly sharper and higher gain than the original V2 and many prefer that - while the best-selling Vick Audio Muff is the original Ram’s Head variety. Mike Vickery has sort of been a proxy mentor for me on Muffs - and my practical Muff knowledge comes mostly from him, while I of course also regularly reference everyones favourite resource - Kit Rae’s Big Muff Pi Page.
Big Muffs tend to have a lot more components than your average fuzz, rat or overdrive (circa 46 components) - so there may be limits on how easy all those components are to accommodate x 9. Note that for the PackRat Josh deploys 9 completely separate circuits - featuring 261 components overall - including no less than 40 switches, and 2 OpAmps OP07C and NE5534. For Big Muffs - while there are quite a few more components in play - you might though be able to do some clever switching to resolve that to a degree.
I've stated before that I would quite like a 5th Mids knob here - but see how that would not be fully practical within how these pedals are constructed - which are very much at the limits of available space and state of the art!
It may well be that because of the complexities of the Big Muff circuits that no more than 6 can be fit it - while it would for sure be nice to get the full selection as I see it.
What say all of you - does my visualisation look about right - or would you propose different varieties here?
