Hot off the press!

Well, I had a fabulous Guitar Show this year, best one yet for me personally! I picked up 5 pedals at the show, as well as bumping into Chris Buck, KDH (Kelan Hughes), and my very good friends Markus and Izzy Reeves, also - I had lunch with Jonny Brelliott over at Brew 23!

I attended just one show this month - but it was a great one - the #2 Alternative Guitar Show @ Hackney...

Readers should have noted per my recent #2 Alternative Guitar Show report - that I picked up a new Hello Sailor Effects pedal at that show. It’s actually an HSE-transformed version of the somewhat budget Joyo Voodoo Octave Fuzz - with primo component parts replacements, added functionality, and a whole new look.

These are the Mods as such :

• New 3-way Clipping Selector on top edge : Silicon [1N4007] / None / Germanium [D9E]
• 2 x Tropical Capacitor replacements
• 2 x Sprague Electrolytic

It was quite the deliberation - deciding which image should be the cover shot for this feature - on balance I think I made there right decision by picking the very first photo of the day - where Hello Sailor Effects certainly delivers that Technicolour Rainbow which looks so appealing. Moreover I snagged a one-off pedal from that stand - a few minutes before the show was officially opened - but more of that later!

I’m going to start this month’s roundup with a couple of conundrums that I’m still kind of wrestling with.

Firstly about my old friends at Sinvertek, whom I can’t but think that they might have jumped the shark with their latest release. It’s another spin off of the Scream Honey line - the 4th or 5th in that series. Mr Wu seems to introduce tiny improvements each year, and every other year we get a price rise too. On this occasion the offering is two pedals - supposedly both slightly different ...

When I visited the Brighton Guitar Show and FX Pedal Expo, my good friend Joe Halliday had this surprise in store for me. Another quite brilliant and uniquely personal fuzz pedal creation. In fact a Mini Edition of Joe’s latest Monmouth Octave Fuzz Circuit.

I really could not have specified this pedal better myself - with a beautiful antique and relic’d salmon pink paintjob - covered in a tastefully crackled lacquer, and with Brass appointments throughout - including the knobs, LED surround...

These shows are really like family reunions for me nowadays - I know most everybody on the pedal scene now and seemed to be mostly warmly welcomed into their company. I was up really early on the Saturday - in fact when I walked in at 08:15 only Boss and NRG Effects were close to having set ...

So scanning through this month it seems to have been mostly about Guitar / Pedal Shows, Japanese Pedals, and Pedals Delayed and Missing in the Post!

The Guitar Shows have been pretty fast and furious for March - with two of the most significant ones of the year, along with a fledgling grassroots one : The Guitar Show (Cranmore Park - Birmingham / Shirley), London Synth & Pedal Expo (Studio 9294, Hackney Wick, London), The Alternative Guitar Show (The Fighting Cocks, Kingston).
