The TC Electronic Stereo Chorus+ Pitch Modulator & Flanger (SCF) is a genuine all-time modulation classic which has been in high demand sine it debuted in 1976 as TC Electronic’s very first pedal. Early versions notably had a wired-in power chord, while this new Gold Edition makes use of a standard 2.1mm Boss-style 9V DC [-] power jack. Famous users of this classic pedal include Andy Timmons, Brian May, Eric Johnson, Jeff Buckley, Joe Bonamassa, John Petrucci, Matt Bellamy and Paul Gilbert.
Also notable against most of its peers, the SCF has always been stereo output capable - which is perfect for my rig!
Controls - Speed : 0.1 - 10, Relative Width : 0 to 6, Mode : Chorus / Pitch Modulation / Flanger, Intensity : 0 to 6, Input Gain.
There aren’t a lot of controls here per se - but what we do have is incredibly impactful and interactive - with 3 playback modes, and knobs to shape Speed, Width (Sweep), and Intensity. TC Electronic have also improved the Preamp / Input Gain circuit to give it a little more oomph! While it retains its celebrated low impact ’Sound of Silence’ noise floor.
Of course now being a member of the Behringer Music Tribe family this obviously has to use Behringer’s own CoolAudio analog BBD chips - and the V3207D selected is pretty much perfect for the task. I’ve always wanted one of these - didn’t want the power cable versions, while there are modded versions out there, and I really didn’t like the later ’purple patch’ edition. So this new / revival Gold Edition is nigh on perfect for me (while a compact would of course have been even better!). This is a really nuanced and sweet sounding chorus and flanger that is still distinct in its tone and texture against all its peers - every collection should have one!
I’m actually delighted that TC Electronic have seen fit to re-release this, and while I’m no fan of Behringer in general - I have to say that they have done a superb job on this revival. And the price point here is spot on at $149 / €149 / £149. The one bum note here which seems to be TC Electronic’s way these days - they’ve announced the product weeks / months ahead of any being available. Even Andertons does not list exactly when it will come into stock - which is very rare.
2022 is my ’Year of the Flanger’ - so I will be treating this more as a flanger and shoe-horning it into that selection!
Are any of you as keen on this as I am?
