So we get two interesting fuzzes appearing at the same time - Beetronics’ Abelha Tropical Fuzz, and this Walrus Audio + Hagerman Amplification Silt Harmonic Tube Fuzz. Funnily Jim Hagerman has 7 Tube-powered pedals in his extensive pedal range - and the only variety he doesn’t cover in his own Tube range is Fuzz!
When I think of Tube Fuzz - the first that comes to mind is Effectrode’s Mercury Fuzz, and then I recall that Friedman also used to have a tube-powered fuzz called the Fuzz Fiend. You definitely get some interesting breakup harmonics with tube fuzzes - and the Silt Fuzz certainly seems to do that part particularly well - with some smart EQ controls too.
In fact it kind of doubles down on the Harmonics with a dedicated second footswitch which engages some sort of frequency doubler before the drive section of the pedal. That produces crisp, octave-like sounds - giving you superbly textured lead tones on demand. Walrus Audio also recommend that you roll back your guitar’s Tone knob when engaging this mode.
Controls - Volume, Tone, Gain, Contour : Highness / Flat / Lowpass, Bypass Footswitch, Harmonic Footswitch.
Importantly the pedal is very user-friendly on the power supply side too - with just a 9V DC [-] 300mA requirement - so all round pretty pedalboard friendly.
The Silt Harmonic Fuzz is available for $299.99 from the Walrus Audio Webstore - in both Red and Black colourway editions - where the Black edition is rather more minimally styled - I quite like both! Since the Beetronics Abelha crossed my radar first - that is ahead of the Silt on the priority list. I’m mostly decided that I’m going to get the Abelha, while I’m still in the process of making my mind up about the Silt - looks and sounds very decent though! Should be at International dealers imminently too!
