I actually only got to know ’Axe and You Shall Receive’ Owner / Founder Scott Hager relatively recently - while I first bought a pedal from his store (courtesy of Reverb.com) back in 2017 - my much loved ’Gold Bar’ edition of Dr Scientist’s The Elements Preamp / Drive which readers will have seen heavily featured on this site.
Earlier this year - back in March in fact - Scott and I bonded over Big Tone Music Brewery’s (BTMB) EQ’d Vintage Series - where those pedals reached an ideal price threshold for me and I actually snapped up everything Scott had for that range in the end. Firstly I dipped my toes with the Gray Box Overdrive (DOD250) and after an overwhelmingly positive experience with that, bought a few more, and then the remainder after that - 8 all told. Scott then put me in touch with Mr BTMB / BYOC himself - one Keith Vonderhulls - who provided me with the one key pedal that I was missing from that range - the British Overdrive (Blues Breaker / Plexi).
Within the back and forth of all those dialogues and transactions - Scott and I became firm friends - where I still buy pedals from him fairly regularly - even when he is over the pond and far away as such. He has a fantastic selection of pedals with often some rather appealing rare editions amongst them and where I snap up both recent launches and slightly older classics which he still carries in stock. One of the pedals I picked up from him most recently was the Canadian Dealers Edition of the Fuzzrocious Li’l Fella - by far and away the most attractive variant of that pedal - and that features in the above visual overview too. I also recently snapped up a long since discontinued Catalinbread Heliotrope Harmonic Pixelator - from one of the earliest brands Scott ever stocked.
The first official trade for Axe and You Shall Receive!
Like many, Scott started dabbling in guitar music gear while at University (McMaster in Hamilton) - where initially it was just a matter of trading up - in the pursuit of acquiring better and better gear for personal use. Those early trades were really just to help fund Scott's own gear acquisitions. Interestingly Scott started University one year before me - in 1987! And he started trading pedals and gear around half-way through his second year there.
Over a relatively short time he picked up a lot of very useful contacts - including a somewhat local player named Larry King - who seemed to have a lot of vintage gear connections with Nashville in particular. Another early connection was ex-pat Brit John Newman. Between those, Scott did a serious amount of trade in his early days and built up a sizable collection of vintage gear - where he was also in exactly the right place and at the right time just when the Internet started to become more popular for those kinds of transactional activities.

Scott graduated from University with an extremely useful degree as a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering & Management in 1992 (5 year course) - particularly apt for his later career with electronic devices. The exact same year that I graduated from Aston University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Managerial and Administrative Studies - Marketing Specialisation (4 year course).
During those early years, Scott was holding down a day job as a Professional Engineer - being employed as a high level Consulting Engineer, County Engineer, and General Manager at a large Hydrogeological firm - right up until 2007 when he decided to stake his future on 'Axe and You Shall Receive' and fully incorporated that company to be his main day job. The process involved a massive Renovation of his house, and dedicating the 2,400 square foot basement to serve as the warehouse, showroom and demo-space for that business. Scott sadly had to sell off a significant part of his then vintage collection to fund those developments.

Scott has 4 Basketball-obsessed sons, and with the business located within the main premises - this is even more of a family business than most. Scott was in a hurry to register his new business, and sort of on the spot came up with 'Axe...and You Shall Receive! As something of a quirky and memorable moniker - with not too much thought about URL length, acronyms or likely typos from some of the more ham-fisted of customers. The name certainly has a distinct ring to it and is oddly rather quite memorable - so 2 out of the 3 branding disciplines isn't too bad!
I find it quite incredible that such a sizeable operation is run out of an essentially secret domestic bunker!
Scott's earliest office above!
While the business wasn't incorporated until 2007, most of those commercial activities had been happening for a long time already - obviously in tandem with Scott's daytime Engineering jobs over those earliest of years.
Scott made most of those early industry connections through attending a series of local guitar clinics - as well as a variety of Guitar Shows - including especially the super-sized NAMM Winter Show.
The first official brand roster for Axe and You Shall Receive! consisted of just the following 6 brands :
BlackBox Electronics, Tokai Guitars, 3MS Pedals, GS Wylie, Troubled Variance, and Jacques Stompboxes.
Early GS Wylie Moonrock Fuzz
BlackBox Electronics was the very first proper official trade deal that Scott made with his counterpart Lorren. For a shipment of 8 pedals - per the above photograph under Origins! Notably the first pedal sold was from that first batch - one of the top left X-rays!
Just a few years later Scott had quite a different selection in stock - with many of those somewhat rare vintage items, and where only Tokai of those original 7 still played a significant role :
Acetone, BBE, Boss, Bruno, Colorsound. Coron. Crybaby, Dallas Arbiter, Dan Armstrong, DOD Electronics, Electra Phase, Electro-Harmonix, Fender, Giulietti, Guyatone, Ibanez, Jen Mister / CryBaby, John Hornby Skewes, Jordan, Kent, Kong Toneworks, Lexicon, Locobox, Marlboro, Maxon, Morley, Mosrite, MXR, PAX, Pearl, Prescription Electronics, RFX, Roadkill, Rockman, Rocktron, Roland, Ross, Royal Double, Schaller, Sekova, SignalFlex, Snarling Dogs, Thomas Organ, Tokai, Tubeworks, Umi, Univox, Voodoo Labs, and Zoom.

Scott is very evidently a huge music fan - with significant evidence of that on his Blog and Social Media accounts- incredibly eclectic and wide ranging. Scott's top 10 favourites (in alphabetical order) include : The Beatles, Fu Manchu, Iron Maiden, The Kinks, Leatherface, Minus the Bear, Propagandhi, Samiam, Stiff Little Fingers, and Swervedriver. Music as well as Music Gear is very largely a relationship business, and Scott has picked up a number of good friends and allies along the way.
The very first AxeAndYouShallReceive.com website went up in 2001 - per the above visual - and it was quite a rudimentary-looking affair compared to contemporary sites now, but kind of industry standard back in those days - while really just a long-form catalog list in many ways.
The next key date is around 2004 - when a lot of the more longer-term brands started to make their way onto the roster - including Big Tone Music Brewery and BYOC, Catalinbread, Subdecay, and Xotic Effects - leading to the first of the glory years before the endless price-cutting by newer players like Pro Guitar Shop and Prymaxe.
Nik Huber with Scott - at Winter NAMM 2020
Scott attended his first Montreal Guitar Show in 2011 - which introduced him to several key players in high-end luthiery - and led to the stocking of prestige Guitar brands including Nik Huber (Germany), Fibenare (Hungary), JJ Guitars (UK), and Ruokangas (Finland). That very same year the website saw a very significant upgrade - courtesy of Scott's University buddy Adrian Grah of Blue Pill Software.

It turns out that the very first pedal Scott officially sold through Axe and You Shall Receive! was obviously one from the first batch of BlackBox Electronics pedals - in fact one of the two X-ray Boost/Distortion pedals initially ordered. Those were priced at $149 back then!
The clear bestseller for all the time Scott has been in business is that perennial classic - the low-gain and effortlessly transparent Greer Amps Lightspeed Organic Overdrive - as pictured here in the 7 various colourways available from the store.
An International Family Business operated from a Secret Domestic Bunker around 1 hour outside of Toronto!
"We specialize in vintage and boutique guitars, amplifiers and guitar effects pedals."
Axe and You Shall Receive! is an exceedingly modern family business - with a shared but separate basement environment to house that business - which I will ever more refer to as The Secret Bunker! The Basement Bunker consists of 2,400 square feet of storage - with a central showroom - which can also be used for demonstration purposes. The premises are further shared by two territorial cats and a mild-mannered double-coat sheepdog.
Scott's Office Space
The basement consists of a well-organised maze of shelves which are stacked high with all manner of products - with strategic clusters of amps and guitars placed at key junctures, and a defined space / annex for demo purposes. The basement also includes Scott's main office - and a laundry space - of course replete with the requisite number of bikes stored in an adjoining section. Funny how bikes ofter seen to be stored in or near laundry rooms - wherever those might be situated in the property.
Typical Demo Area Setup Above
The whole family helps out with the business and can easily be press-ganged into service as they're typically within easy reach! Scott's wife Janelle mostly takes care of the company's accounts, and the 4 sons are involved in various daily tasks for the business on a more ad-hoc basis. Fortunately for everyone - several courier companies pick up and drop off packages at least once or twice every day including mostly Canpar Express for domestic deliveries, and UPS for International shipping.
There are currently near 200 brands stocked overall - with 159 of those covering pedals, 13 guitar brands, and 14 amp brands, and some miscellaneous accessories and other related categories. There are typically around 1,600 SKU's or varieties stocked at any time - which takes a considerable amount of organising! And Scott puts in a concerted effort to ensure that orders go out the same day - even ones made relatively late in the afternoon.
Of the earliest brands, nothing remains in stock nowadays and several of those brands are alas no longer with us anymore. A number of the second wave brands are still intact including of course Electro-Harmonix in a very big way.
Scott also has a separate Distribution business searchanddistro.com which currently carries and promotes around 36 brands within Canada - including :
1981 Inventions, Alexander Pedals, Baroni Lab, Beetronics, Benson Amps, Big Tone Music Brewery, Caroline Guitar Company, Cooper FX, Cusack Music, Damnation Audio, Disaster Area Designs, Fairfield Circuitry, FoxGear Pedals, Frost Giant Electronics, Fuzzrocious Pedals, GFI System, Greenhouse Effects, Greer Amps, Gurus Pedals, Haunted Labs, Hilbish Design, IdiotBox Effects, JET Pedals, Mastery Bridges, Milkman Sound, Mojo Hand FX, Monster Effects, Montreux Pedals, Rainger FX, Spaceman Effects, Stringjoy, Subdecay, ThorpyFX, Tortuga Effects, Wren and Cuff Pedals, WMD and Zander Circuitry.
Scott famously was the only dealer to be featured in the recent 'Pedal Movie' - getting a brief cameo in the second half of the film.
As with previous features of this type, from the roster of 159 Pedal brands - Scott and I picked out the 12 which best reflect the variety and depth covered by Axe and You Shall Receive! From each of those brands we then selected an 'Ambassador Pedal' that best showcases that particular brand - sometimes a perennial classic, and at other times a brand new innovation. The list is alphabetical and includes reference to all pedals stocked for that brand :
An incredibly creative digital pedals brand headed up by Matthew Farrow - his Neo Series pedals carry all manner of smart innovations - including Neo Morph switching, Secondary Parameters, and onboard Presets. This brand is quite distinctive and modern in its approach - with a number of very unique pedals on its roster. I myself have an interesting mix of new and old from this brand - including the Hot Pink Drive, Jubilee Silver Overdrive, La Calavera Phaser, Marshmallow Artificial Sweetener, and smart recent Sugarcube Stereo Chorus / Vibrato / Rotary - which serves as a fitting Ambassador Pedal here.
Ambassador Pedal = Sugarcube Stereo Chorus / Vibrato / Rotary pedal
28 varieties stocked :
Chris Benson is probably still best known for his Chimera Amp - but then probably his Preamp Pedal, and latter Chase Bliss Audio Automatone Preamp MKII collaboration. His most recent innovation is his Germanium Fuzz - which includes smart electronics to keep the Bias consistent regardless of incidental environmental temperature changes.
Ambassador Pedal = Preamp
2 varieties stocked :
I'm a huge fan and personal friend of Tom Majeski - who is probably still most famous for his Generation Loss VHS Degradation Effects Pedals and Chase Bliss Audio Collaborations. While for me his major innovation thus far has been his incredible Arcades Modular Multi-FX Pedal - which of course I have and love. I also have his Chase Bliss Audio Generation Loss Collaboration - and am still considering getting in his V2 Generation Loss - which significantly improves on its predecessors.
Ambassador Pedal = Generation Loss V2
4 varieties stocked :
This clean and industrial looking Canadian brand has long been everyone's secret weapon - particularly the Shallow Water Modulator and Meet Maude Analogue Delay. Also the somewhat under-appreciated Barbershop Overdrive - which is certainly on my wishlist as an essential representative of the transparent low-gain format. Guillaume Fairfield makes exceptionally musical - while understated / minimalist looking pedals - and the Shallow Water is still very much his signature flagship pedal - just the most amazing aqueous modulator with an output that belies its moniker!
Ambassador Pedal = Shallow Water K-Field Modulator
9 varieties stocked :
Husband and wife Ryan and Shannon Ratajski make some of the most exceptionally creative Fuzz pedals out there - where I personally am lagging a little behind in my acquisitions from this brand. Although I did pick up the Canadian Dealers Version of the Li'l Fella, the Ambassador Pedal here - direct from Scott of course. There are some real depths to this imaginative range - and I will most likely acquire a 420 and Croak Fuzz - as well as some variation of the Cat Tail Distortion. There's plenty to like here and Ryan and Sharon very much have their own cool and quirky style!
Ambassador Pedal = Li’l Fella Overdrive / Distortion / Fuzz
20 varieties stocked :
Indonesian giant GFI System is a rare innovator from that part of the world - responsible for some of the very best Delay and Reverb, and Modulation Pedals. Where the Specular Tempus and Synesthesia are particular stars and leaders in their categories. I love my GFI Synesthesia and consider it to be the finest Multi-Modulator out there currently. I'm waiting for a V2 Specular Tempus to adopt a the same super-smart format and topology - hopefully that is not too far away now!
Ambassador Pedal = Synesthesia Dual-Channel Multi-Modulator
10 varieties stocked :
Nick Greer is something of a drive specialist where he certainly dominates the low-to-mid-gain overdrive arena. His Lightspeed is near enough everyone's favourite low-gain pedal - while I probably somewhat prefer the slightly texturally richer Southland Harmonic Overdrive. I've probably got a few more to get here - and am still deciding on whether the Supa Cobra or SOMA '63 is the right pedal to complete my initial Greer Amps Overdrive Trifecta!
Ambassador Pedal - Lightspeed Organic Overdrive
15 varieties stocked :
Matt Shea or AtariMatt is the kingpin of creatively irreverent IdiotBox Effects - who do a fine line in quirky pedals - with numerous killer effects for Bass in particular - like their legendary Blower Box Bass Distortion. There's real strength in depth here with some particularly innovative circuit combinations here. I have yet to fully go deep with my explorations of this brand - while there is already much to love. Possibly Matt's most memorably iconic pedal to date is the Han-Taun Overdrive - with its smart visual mashup. This brand can look a little 8-bit and cartoonish at times - but it has definite hidden depths! I will be exploring this in detail in the not too distant future!
Ambassador Pedal = Blower Box Bass Distortion
29 varieties stocked :
David Rainger is the very epitome of Dedicated yet Mad Scientist - creating a roster of incredibly distinctive and innovative pedals - including the Dr Freakenstein and Bleep Fuzzes, Minibar Liquid Analyser Overdrive, Drone Rainger, and killer recent Snare Trap BeatBox - which is down on my acquisitions wishlist. I have only a limited edition of the original Freakenstein - and I know I need to add more of these to my collection - all these are incredibly unique!
Ambassador Pedal = Snare Trap Rhythm Device
14 varieties stocked :
Readers of this blog will know I'm a huge fan of Spaceman Effects and a loyal collector of those - while I started a little late in the day - and missed out on some early compact classics - including the Rumble Fuzz, Gemini III, and Mercury III. Spaceman Zak has been regularly hitting these out of the park - with my favourites do date being the Gemini IV and Sputnik III Fuzzes, Artemis Modulated Filter, and Aurora Analog Multi-Mode Flanger - I also have a soft spot for the Aphelion Harmonic Overdrive! The most recent and exceptional Aurora Analog Flanger is the Ambassador Pedal of choice on this occasion.
Ambassador Pedal = Aurora Analog Flanger
21 varieties stocked :
I've much featured Subdecay on this site and often stated that I really should have more of these in my collection. Where I particularly like the 3 Synth Pedals - M3, Octasynth and Octave Theory - also perennial favourites Quasar Phaser and Starlight Flanger. While my next acquisition target is the Prometheus DLX Filter - which I'm opportunistically looking to score at a good price one of these days! There are some really smart pedals within this range - also including the Tap-Tempo Pattern Tremolo - TremCoder.
Ambassador Pedal - M3 Monophonic Guitar Synthesizer
22 varieties stocked :
Adrian Thorpe is a very good friend of mine - and I love everything he turns his mind to. He is the most meticulous person in his development process - and always delivers exactly the right effect with the right moniker and symbolically military moniker. He has a number of category leading and best of breed pedals to his name - including the Camoflange Flanger, The Dane Overdrive and Booster, Fallout Cloud Muff Fuzz, and superb new all-conquering Pulse Doppler Phaser. Everything Thorpy does is distinctive and of the highest quality - and I am well represented in my collection with 11 of his finest. I will likely look to own all of these eventually!
Ambassador Pedal = Pulse Doppler Analog Phaser
15 varieties stocked :
With 159 Pedal Brands on the roster - Axe and You Shall Receive! is a proper cornucopia and treasure trove of effects pedals - featuring and incredibly broad roster of individual effects - with many pedals found here not available elsewhere.
If you properly explore the range - you will find many a hidden gem like I have - unique editions, and pedals which might be sold out or hard to get elsewhere. If you like Spaceman Effects in particular - then there's a lot to be happy about there.
Scott's all-time favourite pedal brands are largely per the featured list with some extras - Alexander Pedals, Big Tone Music Brewery/BYOC, Fairfield Circuitry, Fuzzrocious, GFI System, Greer Amps, Idiotbox Effects, Rainger FX, and Subdecay and on the vintage side, Electro-Harmonix, Roland, and Shin-ei.
Fuzzrocious' Ryan Ratajski with Scott - at one of those many NAMM show appearances
Scott covers a significant amount of Native Canadian brands too - including Diamond Guitar Electronics, Dr Scientist, Empress Effects, Fairfield Circuitry, Industrial Electric, and Retro-Sonic.
This is a proper International selection of killer effects builders with hidden depths within the catalogue if you choose to explore it fully. Scott himself is a fantastic mine of information on everything regarding pedals as few have been in the industry quite as long as him. He's seen most of it all before and can offer some incredibly useful guidance and insights.
It's been 10 years since the last major website update, and I feel that it's probably due another update now - to make all those brands more easily accessible - and give more visibility to the individual pedals with larger thumbnail sizes and the like. Some may find it easier to navigate the collection via the Reverb.com AaYSR! Store - where I actually typically use both in tandem.
I personally have found Axe and You Shall Receive an incredibly useful resource - and that has everything to do with Scott Hager himself. It's incredible to think that this whole roster is held together simply by a series of gentleman's agreements.

Much like the other Boutiques I've featured on this site - Axe and You Shall Receive is very much a personal project - and Scott is an incredibly useful ally to have in your corner! There are some serious hidden depths here if you but explore the full catalogue!
