I’ve long been a fan of Death by Audio (DBA), while I’ve often found their box sizes to be somewhat unwieldy and therefore not particularly suitable for my pedal-chain or rig. One of their pedals I’ve long had my eye on has been the enduringly cool Evil Filter - which is another which is just a little too large for me to fit in, but it does truly amazing things.

So I’m delighted that of late DBA has been releasing more and more regularly sized compact pedals - which have included the excellent fairly recent Speed Tripper (with Levitation), Total Sonic Annihilation 2, and Time Shadows (Pedal Movie).

Death by Audio effects are always rawer, more visceral and more unencumbered than most - and their latest 2-knob dirt pedal beautifully combines an extended-range dirty Germanium (Soviet МП10Б Transistors) gain stage with a flavour of the Evil Filter on top - with that equally wide-ranging frequency carve-up filter. This may very well be an evolution of the earlier same compact sized Evil Fuzz which wasn’t too dissimilar.

DBA describes it best as having a Huge Gain Range which sweeps from mild overdrive to fully blasted-out fuzz! And the filter dial provides surgical scalpel-like precision control over those frequency ranges - which can deliver an intense low-end, scooped mids, and a sharp, piercing top-end as you wish.

The choice of gold accents and those saucer-like knobs looks amazing too. Priced at £215 equivalent, this should be available from all the typical DBA dealers any day now. And of course direct from the Death by Audio Webstore.

I’m certainly impresses as I’ve always had a soft sport for Germanium Drives and Distortions - and this one very much sounds suitably textured too - definitely one for the collection. What say all of you - have any of you been won over by the Germanium Filter too?
